I searched for an item on ebay and in the filter section to the left I ticked 'UK only'. I bought an item that was listed as being in manchester. it arrived and it was not entirely as I had expected so I raised a return. the return postage addess was given as a place in china. it cost more to return the item than I originally paid for the item.
I feel scammed here.
so I managed to get a callback from ebay support and the guy basically shriugged his shoulders and said I had to contact the seller and ask for either a return address in the UK, or a refund.
this is pathetic support on the part of ebay.
and sellers like this should not be allowed on ebay. I've been buying off ebay for 24 years and this has really punched a hole in my confidence. I will be buying much more cautiously from now on.

Open a case for item not as described and escalate on day 4 if not refunded beforehand. Listen to no excuses or promises from the seller to close the case early, and do not forget to escalate.
The location on listing just shows the item's location, and many Chinese sellers use a forwarding Company in the UK to facilitate a faster dispatch, so if the item needs to be returned it goes back to that UK address Not China. If the seller provides a Chinese address, contact CS but do so only first thing in the morning when the lines first open at 8 a.m. as there's more chance of Dublin answering. They will provide that UK label, or as they did with me, made a discretionary refund and my item went straight to the bin !
To find a seller's country of registration, click on their feedback score, this brings up their feedback profile which will tell you the seller's country of registration.

thankyou but I'm already stuck half way through a return and the only option I have is an address in china. and to make it worse its a long gobbledy-*bleep* address that will surely lead nowehere, even the ebay support guy saw this. and it ensures my item will get lost and no refund will ever come through
the item upon arrival was not quite as I had expected and in an effort to be a considerate buyer I figured it was partly my fault so I chose 'ordered the wrong item' when i raised a return, expecting to return the item to manchester and I didn't mind paying for return posatge. I can't go back now. I'm stuck in limbo. I wish I'd have chosen 'item not as described' but its too late now.
and i'm astonished that ebay allows this kind of behaviour from sellers.

By choosing the reason you have, you have opened a "change of mind" return which the buyer has to pay to return.
But @tressygirl is correct in saying the item must be returned to the location on the listing.
Check the location and if it is in the UK escalate your case after 3 full days of it being opened, saying you have not received a return label from the seller yet and ebay may just refund you.

thankyou, I checked the the location of the item as listed (under 'seller contact information') and found it to be shanghai in china. I've never before been stung like this on ebay so its a lesson learnt.

The Sellers Country of Registration is shown in Feedback Profile however items may be shipped from a Location in the UK and should therefore be returned to a UK Address as shown on listings at Postage > Example :-

I agree it should be that way but ebay support said I had to return the item to the address given in china

They have informed you incorrectly.
go back and state that you require a return label to return the product to a uk address as the product was advertised as being in the UK.
