So ebay is now rubbish for buyers as well as sellers. Stopped selling back when so called Simple Delivery was introduced. Probably time to stop buying also?
Left a maximum bid and when I check a lower bid has won the item. Curiously the winning bid is described as - "private listing - bidder identity protected" Well nothing 'fishy about that then, hey?!
Broken beyond repair. Absolutely have no trust left in this platform at all.

What is the Item Number please?

If it was a Private Seller then it is probably the Buyer Protection Fee that's causing the confusion. When you place a maximum bid it is inclusive of the BPF, however, when looking at the bidding history the amounts shown exclude the BPF.

Hello, thank you for replying (and to style-wise) .
This would seem to possibly be an answer. The starting price was £7.55 I bid over £8 yet my first bid shows as £6.99. To be honest it's as clear as mud or more to the point I ( and I suspect many others) just can't be bothered with nonsense like this.
Ebay used to be ok, a few quirks but generally straightforward and easy to use, been using it for over 20 years. But now it just seems more hassle than it is worth.
I've also noticed that many items I've searched for recently could be found cheaper elsewhere. I'll keep the account, probably still buy from time to time ( likely BIN sales only - given the issue raised here) but sadly ebay no longer necessarily the first port of call.
Thanks again for the replies and good luck with your own ebaying!
