Why Did This Happen?

Hi all.

I placed a bid on an item on 20/05, just the lowest bid of £11.11 to take away the 'offer' option & with the intention of upping my bid at the end of the auction.

Today I get an eBay message to say that my bid has been cancelled.  When I check the information I find that my bid has been 'retracted' by the seller with the reason for this as:

Explanation:
Item sadly no longer available. Sold elsewhere. Very sorry.
Cancelled:
22 May 2025 at 7:43:12pm.

The auction was due to finish at  20.39pm & was still running when I looked at the information.

After the auction I went to look at the item in my 'ended' watch list, expecting to find the usual bit at the top that tells you that the seller has ended the auction due to an error in the listing or similar. Instead I find that it had 4 bidders & has sold for £25.05 +P&P.

I am struggling to see why my bid was 'cancelled' with what was obviously a  BS  excuse, only for it to carry on & be actually sold online.  I had been the only bidder for 2 days but there were 9 'watchers', so probably a chance that someone else would have bid nearer the end of the auction.

The one negative feedback is for a cancellation of a bid with a refund & then a re-list for higher price, which they have replied to. (saying that the item had gone missing so they cancelled & then found it again so relisted it)   They then have 54 positive feedbacks.

I know there's nothing I can do about this as frustrating as it is,  I'm hoping the 'retraction' isn't going to stay on my record as I didn't actually do it.
Rant over.  Dawn.

When auctions have less than 12 hours to go the seller can't actually cancel it.

All they can do is cancel bids and hope they can keep up with late bids and cancel those too before the auction ends.

Sounds like your seller didn't manage that and will now have to deal with consequences of no item and an upset buyer.

Your feedback page shows no bid retractions.
