I have sent a set of golf irons to a customer but he has not received them. The courier I used as said they have lost them ,so the customer wants a refund and I have to make a claim with the courier

You have to refund your buyer first.
They need to open a case for item not received, and if this was a ' Simple Delivery' item, eBay will deal with the refund.
If not, accept the case within 3 days and refund through those case details, if tracking has still not shown delivery.
You then, need to fight your corner with the courier service for your refund, for a lost item.

Ebay will take the money from your bank, and when the payment is released, you will get that.

Go to Your Orders
Find the order and click View Order Details.
On that page there is a More Actions button from which you click and select Send Refund.
