Hi all. I recently bought a PS1 game that was a fair bit under typical market value but I went for it because the seller had some recent feedback. It's turned up though and the seller has sent me 2 other cheap and tatty games instead. The listed game I purchased was Castlevania SOTN in the double CD box with the soundtrack, artbook etc. The seller sent me 2 battered single case PS1 games tightly wrapped with layers and layers of clingfilm, possibly so its a similar weight and thickness? It seems like an obvious attempt at a scam but the weird part is that the seller is trying to turn it back on me saying that I am trying to scam them.
As soon as I opened the package I logged a return request with the seller and they responded pretty much immediately asking why I was doing this and that they can't believe this is happening 'I sent the correct game' , 'please can you do the right thing and close the case' etc, etc. I just responded saying that I have a business on ebay with excellent feedback and I have no reason to deceive anyone and that I will be requesting that ebay step in as soon as it is possible.
The seller keeps messaging me asking me to do the right thing and pleading with me not to do this to them. Saying that they wish they hadn't sold it to me and they they so not have the game to send me or the money to refund. I haven't responded - I'm just going to leave it to ebay. My question is; has anybody been in a similar situation and why would somebody keep up a charade and try to accuse the other person of scamming them? Is it because they believe it will help their case in a dispute? Why would they not just ignore the return request, take the money and abandon their ebay account? Has this happened to anybody else and what was the outcome?
Thank you!

ignore the seller and escalate the case on day 4 to eBay to deal with and get you your refund.

Just ignore the seller's pleas and excuses, yes some will come out with every plea under the sun to make you close a return case.
Never do this.
They have 3 days to accept the case, pay for a return tacked label if they want the item returning first, or fully refund you. If none of this happens in 3 days, escalate the case, eBay step in and force the refund.
Do not close the case early for any reason, don't reply to any of their messages, and do no forget to escalate.

I would also add them to your blocked buyer list.
