Return of Large Tape Recorder?

I won a fairly large reel–to–reel tape recorder last weekend in a standard auction–style listing, and it certainly wasn't cheap because there'd been a lousy bid–war on it and it went well into three figures!

. . . Yesterday morning I was woken up by my Friend whom I live with going berserk at the postman because this tape recorder had arrived and he wasn't going to allow me to keep it, so the postman took it back as "Delivery refused by Recipient!"

. . .I opened a return case for it but the seller is also refusing to accept the return, with the usual sob–story about having to clear a deceased relative's house!

. . .Given that there was twelve bids on this thing, and a lousy bid war to boot, it's obvious that two other bidders wanted it badly enough as well!

. . .Am I stuck with this thing probably ending up on the local dump where the seller is, and no prospect of any refund for the same? My friend didn't allow me to unpack the tape recorder or examine it to see if it arrived undamaged or not!

. . .The eBay Status for this purchase is "Return Closed" and I've left no feedback yet – I normally leave +ve f/b once I've examined the contents!

. . .(I am an electronics engineer so there wouldn't have been any issue if the tape recorder was faulty or damaged as I could have repaired it!)

. . What's likely to happen to it? Will it be dumped by the R.M. if the seller refuses it back from the postie their end, or will I be offered a another chance to receive it?

I’d say your main priority here is to find a new room mate. Why on earth did they refuse to allow the parcel to be left?

I assume if there was a return address on the label then it will be returned to the seller, but i don’t know if you’d have any evidence to show it had been returned. Though depending on how it was posted the tracking may show a return to the original sender.

If I didn't want to be out of pocket and without the item, I would speak politely to the Seller and offer to pay for them to dispatch it again... giving your own sob story about the Friend refusing delivery, not you.

You can't open a return if you don't have the item.  It should be sent back to the seller by RM and hopefully they will then refund your money.

But I have to ask .... why did your friend go beserk and why does he have the power to stop you having it?

No idea what will happen  to the item.,  it depends on whether the seller had a return address on it.

Your friend scuppered any chance of any help from ebay, as by refusing delivery they removed you from the protection of the money back guarantee. 

Besides that, how can you return something you didn't get?

I really don't know where you, or your friendship, go from here.

So how did he know what was in the parcel before it was opened? (it could have been anything.....)

And if he did know what you were expecting to arrive, why didn't he put a stop to it before it got bought/delivered?

Sounds like a parent dealing with a naughty child, there must be more to this.

Sounds like control and anger management issues. 

Also, going berserk at an innocent postman is one way to get RM to stop delivering altogether.

They  could possibly claim nothing has been returned. As has been advised - you are no longer covered under the ebay Money Back Guarantee as the delivery was refused.

Your best hope is you have an positive seller who is willing to refund. I probably would refund you - though I'd be putting you on my block list.

Given that your 'friend' was the one who messed up the seller's sale, which could have successfully gone to the next bidder down, I suggest they have a right to complain.
