Proving my age without a credit card!

I see others have already asked this question (“I do not have a credit card, is there any other way to prove my age to eBay?”), but received little relevant response, with all manner of ‘real world’ suggestions (from joining porn sites, to showing your driving license!), none of which relate to the exclusive eBay setup.

 I can only assume the answer to be ‘No’.

Then it should up to the parents to do their due diligence! Stopping people
buying a jigsaw blade is ridiculous.

You are confusing requirements, primarily because you were stopped from buying something that shouldn't be age verified.

Jigsaw blades being age restricted is purely an ebay thing. I disagree with it.

Stopping knife sales to under 18s is a legal requirement. ebay are doing what they believe is due diligence. Accepting a 20 year old ebay account is being used by a 38 year old is not due diligence. They should adopt a means to add more age verification methods though.

But nobody needs to be 38 years old? That's an unnecessary jump. The basic rationale should be that the user of an Ebay account that was started 20 years ago MUST be OVER 18. 

With our evidently limited options for time travel (in 2025AD) it's beyond fathoming that they have somehow ended up being younger than that. 😁

How will the best available 'due diligence' to 15 levels or more stop that from happening?

With regard to the over-used claim of eBay’s ‘due diligence’, the whole notion is rendered meaningless by the fact that an eBay complaints bod suggested that I got someone else, with a credit card, to buy the cutlery set for me and I buy it from them.

There are always workarounds rendering the most useless and/or unnecessary 'verification' both useless and unnecessary. Even Ebay's customer services seem to know them.

I was going to suggest that the only real-time verification that might just work, should a user's account get hacked by their 5 year old niece, would be an Iris Scan or Thumbprint. But given the pushback we had when Ebay asked for N.I. numbers I can imagine those would be complete non-starters. 

Maybe Ebay could call theirs 'Simple Iris Scan' or just Big SIS? 😉

I dont understand the reluctance to get a credit card.

Although they can easily get you into big debt if no restraint is used.

I have a visa card and it is paid off at the end of every month.

Absolutely ridiculous!! Im nearly 60 , dont own a credit or want one so unable to prove im over 18 ....*bleep*!!!! I only want to cut a tree down & need a chainsaw 🤬🤬

Why get one when u dont need or want one just to verify yr age on eBay.  The sellers lose out cos I'll take my custom elsewhere 🤷‍♀️

I'm having the same issue trying to buy a saw!, It's ridiculous. I'm fifty plus and simply want to make big bits of wood into smaller bits of wood! Ebay? I don't use a credit card but you have allowed me to buy and sell on your platform for years and now suddenly i need visa to give me credit so i can cut wood up. Crazy!!!

Oh deary me, i have just tried to buy a canteen of cutlery and eBay have restricted me from buying it until i provide proof of age with a credit card ! ( i am 71 years of age as eBay well know this)

I am sorry eBay but i do not own a credit card and Never will.

I , like just over 1.5 million UK adults do not own a credit card and some probably will not ever own a credit card.

It is not a reluctance with myself to get a credit card. It is probably my family ethos:

"Don't buy if you cannot pay  the total from your pocket (or bank)"   

"Do not purchase on the never never"

Anyhow, enough of my soap box hooting, i am off to a bricks and mortar shop to buy myself a canteen of cutlery.

Exactly. This ridiculous procedure that ebay are adopting is going to cost
them a lot of business. I've been buying and selling on ebay for years and
now I'm banned from buying a saw blade in case I'm under eighteen. I'm
fifty two!! So I now have to get one in my nearest town. This experience
has left me wondering if I'll buy anything from ebay in the future. Ebay
were fine with me selling items. They have my date of birth, banking
details and address. They were fine for me to give them seller's fee's in
the past but now they suddenly require proof of age. Sorry ebay but this
required age check has been terribly implemented. I don't have a credit
card. Your automated system told me last night to contact customer services
as they can accept different proof of age methods. The call handler then
tells me that you will only accept a credit card!!! AAaaaaaarrggghhhh!!!

Well said!! Same happened with me & im nearly 60. Absolutely ridiculous. Dont understand why sellers not speaking out, its losing them a lot of business 🤷‍♀️.

This has nothing to do with Age Verification....

Kids use their parents Credit Card and soemtimes Kids get Credit Cards from their parents..

I have seen Bladed weapons on ebay being sold, I did a test purchase of the items and was not being asked for Age verification at checkout.

I tried to buy a Wood chisel and ebay demands a credit card to age verify.

They won't accept American Express.

Only Visa or MasterRace card...

This is about getting and harvesting your data..... nothing more nothing less.
