Neither my husband nor I own a credit card and I want to bid on some cutlery, but as that includes a knife I have been asked to prove my age using a credit card. Is there another way to prove my age?
Thanks, Liz

Phew, wouldn’t have been the first time Amazon think they are above the law so good they are above board!
looks like they are checking you against your data held by credit check facilities like Experian. I reviewed some age verification software for my employer and that was thd most frictionless system.
back to ebay then, it is in fact the case that the government suggest that performing age verification using a payment method isn’t actually enough.
so only would take an 18 year old to slip through the net and buy a set of steak knifes….

No one in my immediate family has any credit cards. We cannot buy knifes etc .
We are old school..............save up and buy cash.
As my late father drummed into me......IF you need a credit card to buy something then you cannot afford it lol
Obv Mortgages are different....but saying that credit cards help boost your credit score

My father was exactly the same, and my parents too didn't hold credit cards , and never owned a penny .
However, it came back to bite them, requesting what was, quite a low loan for house repairs, because of no evidence of ' paying back credit' , no credit rating , they were refused.

Such an oppressive policy that needs changing
so eBay are now forcing people to take on more debt to be able to buy tools or eating cutlery. So according to eBay you must be in debt to have the privilege to work with tools or even eat with cutlery? What a joke of a policy. Alphabet/google need to seriously re consider their policies

1 - you don't have to actually pay WITH the credit card - just show that you HAVE a credit card. Once you go through to payment, you could pay however you wish. personally think there should be other options of verification though
2 - Even if that wasn't the case, you could of course immediately pay off the payment
3 - Have zero idea what Google have to do with this.
The overarching policy this is here for is related to UK Law. ebay have gone further than needed however.

You are wrong. The stupid eBay algorithms are tagging all sorts of items
as bladed goods, not just things covered by UK legislation.

This is really crazy how does using a friends credit card prove your 18?
I have a driver's license and passport I'm 57.
Completely idiotic eBay, time for me to take my custom elsewhere 😡

Totally agree

I can buy cutlery online and have it sent age verified postage, never have a problem, using a friends Credit card doesn't prove s***.

Hi Ed dreams, i ordered a knife from amazon yesterday. They do an online check, not sure how they know i didnt lie, but there was no documentation required. Yes apparently the driver will have to check id when he delivers today. Lets see! He better not take one look at me and assume....
Edit reading on I can see you added this info too.

It doesn't - it proves your friend is over 18. As you'd need them to buy it - on their ebay account.
Though I absolutely agree that ebay limiting age verification to just this one method is bonkers.

Hi ron @ronscrafts, we are talking about knives though. We've seen the results of sale of knives and if someone who doesn't have a cr card isn't able to buy some cutlery online is the worst that happens then I can live wiith it.
I know some people will never have a cr card, but personally I never ever use a dr card on line! I feel much more secure using a Cr card or paypal. Sometimes people have to move with the times

I managed to buy my manual meat slicer, using someone else’s credit card…..
I’m now considering how I can use this as an offensive weapon just in case I get burgled or something

Unfortunately moving with said times doesn't allow credit cards if you have blacklisted debt against your name/partners name. This stops credit cards, so after 54 yrs of being alive, earning quite a good living, 2 mortgages, 3 cars, 2 holidays a year - I cannot buy hedgetrimmers!?!? From ebay due to this idiocy. Blacklisted is from 20yrs ago , so ebay will lose business due to incompetence.

I totally appreciate that some people would not and some should not get a credit card, but knife policy is important.
Try this link to find out which company will accept you.

yes knife policy is very important. but hedge trimmers .skilsaws with or without leads ,hand wood saws (new or vintage) makes no sense

In the UK a credit card is not a valid form of ID. I suspect they will hold the information for some future use otherwise why not just ask for a valid form of ID as retailers do.
