Delivery without paying customs

Hi, I am just curious really. I purchased an item from Australia to the UK, was fully expecting to pay cutoms and a handling charge for the local carrier. I received the item in the post. Tthe package was covered in notices saying cutsom payment required, delivery not to be made without fees paid. I was not requested to pay anything and have obviously recieved the package without having to pay anything extra.

No complaints or anything, I'm just curious. The seller shipped it independently with AUS post. Is this some kinf of error or has it been paid somewhere along the line? Thanks

What was the value of the item?  If it was £135 or less then there would be no of customs fees to be paid, instead eBay would have collected VAT at checkout.

If it was more than £135 then customs charges would be payable.  Some carriers request payment after delivery.
