I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before but it appears that international eBay sites are not applying the "buyer protection fee" that has been subjected onto private ebay.co.uk listings.
As a buyer, what's stopping me from simply buying a UK item from ebay.com, and avoiding the fee?
Am I missing something?

The fee isn't only charged on UK to UK sales. It is charged on any sale made through ebay.co.uk regardless of where the buyer resides.
If the buyer purchases through one of the international sites then they won't be charged the fee as they won't receive the buyer protection offered by ebay.co.uk. Instead they will receive whatever protection is offered by the site they are purchasing on.

This thread has made me laugh.
Some regular participants are always advising people that "ebay don't read these message boards"
But the moment somebody pointed out an ebay mistake that was actually costing the company money directly in fees, (as distinct from the many that are slowly trashing ebay's reputation and alienating their customers) somebody from ebay popped up to say they had taken immediate action...
These boards are read by eBay moderators. If they see a board policy is being broken or a loophole as here is being discussed / revealed they are the ones who step in.
The moderators are employed by Khoros who in turn are employed by eBay, so no, eBay directly do not come to these boards, I suppose more's the pity.

If the buyer is overseas they are likely to use their regional site. If the seller is overseas, but the buyer is on ebay.co.uk, protection is provided at no cost. See the FAQ:

What's so blatantly unfair here is that all the other global Ebay sites are not supporting Ebay UK's policy of unfairness!
