out bid by a ( private ) bidder

hi

i recently bid on an item for sale on ebay , after bidding I checked the bid history , as expected i noticed that ebay had not put the full ebay user ID on the bidding history but had blanked out some of the ebay users ID .

At the end of the auction I checked again and noticed that the winning bid was placed by a ( private ) bidder , no information at all was shown about the user ID in the brackets like the others .

I am aware a seller  can make the whole listing and bidding process private , but how can the seller make one bidder out of 10 bidders be private and all of the others not private ?

Is this something the bidder has done before they bid ?

I have never noticed this before on ebay

thanks for any help

Bidders can make their feedback private although what they have got to hide I don't know, but when they bid it just shows as a private bidder instead of the usual a***b.

You're not understanding how things work.

Only the seller and you (while you're logged in) can see your full ID. Every other bidder or viewer sees an encoded version, for obvious reasons. If you log out of your account and look at the listing you've bid on, you'll see how your ID is seen by everyone else.
