Your only hope now of being able to get a refund given that you didn't go through the proper channels would be if you wrote "If undelivered please return to..." on the back of the package, followed by your name and full postal address.  If the item doesn't get delivered and you did put a returns address on the reverse of the parcel then you would get it back again at some point; however, if you didn't include a returns address then if the seller receives the item back again he may well just turn round and say something along the lines of  "I'm not refunding your money until I receive the item back again", and if you've returned the item via an untracked means of postage and the seller already has the item then unfortunately you're not going to be able to get your money back.

The next time you wish to return an item for some reason open a case via the eBay Resolution Centre within thirty days from the date that you received it and once the seller has issued you with an eBay returns label print it off, stick it to the parcel and post the item back to the seller.  If you return anything you've purchased on eBay to the seller via that means then you're guaranteed to get your money back, whether the seller refunds you voluntarily or you have to escalate the case to eBay if the seller becomes awkward and won't issue the refund, in which case eBay will force a refund and return your money in full, regardless of whether the seller wants to issue you with a refund or not.
