My wife just tried to use e-bay for the first time - to place a bid for an item.
She didn't even get an acknowledgement, the item auction closed, but when attempting to find out what happened she was informed that as a result of placing that bid her account was barred for life......!!!!

Placing a bid doesn't bar an account for life. There must be some other reason. Do you know exactly what the message said, word for word...?
If you can't get to the bottom of it, tell your wife to contact Ebay for an explanation. Help & Contact is at top and foot of any page, with Live Chat and request-a-callback available during working hours. I recommend the latter for this issue.
