If any vehicle you look at has a picture with the contact details of the seller, then it is a scam. It will be a hacked account and there will be no vehicle. Also look at other items the seller has listed if there are 100s or even 1000s that is another sign of a scam.

If a seller is not very willing to let you see the vehicle (you do have to buy before you can view) but you must not pay until you have seen inspected and checked all the paperwork.

If not as decribed then you can walk away and the seller should cancel the sale to get their selling fee refunded.

If you have been put off buying a vehicle through ebay, you would get a better deal buying from a well established local dealer and then at least  if any problems you can go back to them, and of course they have a local reputation to maintain.

There is no buyer protection on vehicles. So if you decide to commit to buy, don't pay by PayPal or by card. Pay in cash or by bank transfer, and only once you've fully examined and tested the vehicle and carried out all necessary checks. If you're not good with vehicles, take someone with you who is and who you trust. If you don't know anyone like that, the AA and RAC (and no doubt others too) offer such services for a fee.

Alternatively, buy a car from a reputable dealer in your area.

You will need to be VERY careful if considering buying any motor vehicle through eBay - there are scams everywhere.

In a TV programme about organised crime, a senior police officer reported that one criminal gang alone had registered "multiple hundreds" of fake accounts on eBay to place fraudulent listings for motor vehicles. And this is on top of ordinary sellers not mentioning faults, or lying about the vehicle's condition.

The important thing to understand is that there is NO BUYER PROTECTION WHATSOEVER for vehicles bought here, however you pay. Many buyers don't realise this, which is why vehicle sales on eBay are so attractive to criminals. In one day alone we heard of three buyers who each lost over £6,000 when the cars they paid for turned out not to exist.

Don't fall for bargain prices on eBay, or for claims that eBay will hold your payment safe until you have approved the vehicle. These promises are fake.

The golden rule is not to pay anything, not even a deposit, until you have seen the vehicle, inspected it thoroughly, including the paperwork, and had an HPI check. Then pay in cash, which is the only method of payment that is safe for both buyer and seller.

If a seller comes up with excuses not to accept these conditions, walk away from it.
