Help! I won an auction, but at a price higher than I set my max bid for... What has happened?

Subject says it all... I placed a "max bid" at £371 roughly 20 seconds before the close.
When the auction is closed I have won, but at a price of 387... 0_0
Well above my max bid, and above several bidders who bid above MY "max bid".

Is this a common issue?  What has happened?

Seller has confirmed that my max bid was infact 371....
He does not understand why I am now being asked to pay 387 either.

He also says that according to him I won at 371... but the bid history shows another 2 automated bids coming in at 376 and 381...

None of it makes sense and I'm not even sure if I am "supposed" to have won.. or should pay...or even at what price...

That's absolutely impossible. And sellers have no clue what someone's maximum bid is. You will have to accept that you made a mistake when you entered your maximum bid, and pay in full as contracted.
