Help! I won an auction, but at a price higher than I set my max bid for... What has happened?

Subject says it all... I placed a "max bid" at £371 roughly 20 seconds before the close.
When the auction is closed I have won, but at a price of 387... 0_0
Well above my max bid, and above several bidders who bid above MY "max bid".

Is this a common issue?  What has happened?

Thanks

edit

Seller has confirmed that my max bid was infact 371....
He does not understand why I am now being asked to pay 387 either.

He also says that according to him I won at 371... but the bid history shows another 2 automated bids coming in at 376 and 381...

None of it makes sense and I'm not even sure if I am "supposed" to have won.. or should pay...or even at what price...

What has happened?

You will have made a mistake entering your bid.

We've all done it - once!

It would have been helpful to see the item you were bidding on.

What you may have done is enter £371,00. using a comma instead of a full stop means you might have bid £37100.

Without actually seeing the bid history it is impossible to explain how you appear to have won, but what you are saying happened is impossible.

One thing is certain, if you didn't win you would not be able to pay. If you won it will be in your purchases with PAY NOW.

That's absolutely impossible. And sellers have no clue what someone's maximum bid is. You will have to accept that you made a mistake when you entered your maximum bid, and pay in full as contracted.

A seller can see a winning bidder's winning bid. He cannot see a winning bidder's maximum bid.
