Ebay trying to force me into paying for a return label I don't need.

Hi.

I started a return with a seller who offers a free return label but Ebay's return process is trying to force me to buy a return label that I don't need before I can access the return request which means I can't update the return request with the tracking number I already have, how do I get around this? Thanks.

I'm quite surprised there's no option like "already have return label" on the screen that is trying to force me to pay for one...

Problem is when I try to open the return case to insert the tracking number, it takes me to the page where I need to buy a return postage label, it gives me no option to skip so I can't access the return case unless I pay.

The return is open but I'm unable to update it with the tracking number because it thinks I need to purchase a postage label first and it won't let me continue unless I do so.

if you`ve used a return label supplied by the seller, you don`t need to enter the tracking number, it`s automatic once scanned at the post office.

There's just one problem, Sometimes the eBay prepaid return's label is wrong and does not correspond with the weight of the item, i.e, the postage is underpaid by eBay who bill the seller for it eventually at a later date in their eBay fees.

Sometime in 2019, I bought a piece of 125 mm wide x 20 mm thick steel which was 500 mm in length, The seller used Hermes 3 day service to send it to me but when it arrived it was only 12 mm thick instead of 20 mm ! and was no good for my job, So I opened a return's case via eBay and eBay give me a free Royal Mail return's label for 2nd class post with the tracking number to the value of £2.95 to print off and attach to the long heavy parcel that the metal came in and return the whole thing back to the seller...

All good I thought ! ...until I read the postage weight which was for up to 2 kg !!!!! - The metal weighed approx 6 - 7 kg ! so I knew that the post office were not going to accept this ! and if they did the item most certainly won't arrive back to the seller and I will get no refund ! (it was for £12.00)

I messaged the seller and attached a screenshot for him to see, He said that he would send me another label to print as the eBay label was for the wrong weight, for some reason the seller just sent me the right piece of metal via Hermes next day delivery and refunded back my original £12.00 payment, I contacted him after this to say thanks for the replacement metal and I offered to send the wrong piece of metal back to him by Hermes, but he declined and told me it was his mistake and that there is no need to return the wrong bit of metal as he's now refunded the original payment and closed the eBay case.

I think that he was worried that I may have left poor feedback and DSR's for him but when I left good positive feedback for him instead (because I could see that he was making the effort to help me when eBay messed up the return's label !) he thought I was an OK guy and didn't want to cause me anymore inconvenience.

You don't have to take the label if the seller has already supplied one. Just put the tracking number of the one you have used into the return case.
