My understanding of Duty on Privately bought items is that we would be charged GST on Imports from overseas. this would be at the prescribed rate of $15.
My Question is why we are charged more than 15% on transactions.
The tax should be on the Goods and not freight
So why on a $40 items am I being charged $10.90 this is greater than 15%
Ebay needs to be correct or they are profiteering on NZ Imports. No one else charges me this
The usual basis for import duty is based on "CIF" - cost insurance and freight - and I have no reason to think that it will be different into NZ.
If eBay collects the GST [which is treated as a duty of customs] it passes it on to the NZ authorities.
If something comes into the UK from outside EU and is charged with duty/VAT that is collected on behalf of HMRC on anything over £15 by the post office + a clearance fee. So £15 gives £3 VAT + £8 clearance ....
You are in NZ so could - if it's really worth it - check with you local Customs.
Yes indeed. Prices on eBay are [UK] VAT inclusive but there is no [easy] way to zero-rate them when exported even if the seller is VAT registered. Many countries now seem to get eBay to add their equivalent GST or whatever and - no doubt - collect it from the buyer in the price paid. So in effect you pay twice. What will it be like if we leave the EU?
