Buying from France then eBay adds vat to an item on accepted offer

I have had an offer accepted on an item from France  with vat added to the price in England so the offer I gave included vat then when I get the invoice back from eBay to pay it’s added vat on top of the price I offered so it is now back to the original price and of course the french seller accepted the offer because it didn’t change at all. So I am refusing to pay unless I get the full amount I deducted from the original price. Any help out there. John.

It's hard to answer your question without knowing all the facts.

A seller in France can't include the VAT payable on being imported to the UK.

On eBay, you can only buy "tax paid" from overseas sellers if  1) they have a distribution base in the UK, and the seller already paid UK import duties, or 2) the item was sold using eBay's global shipping programme, which includes the price of all  import duty.

The situation has become complicated, as eBay is now collecting VAT on behalf of HMRC on some imported items. For details, see: https://www.ebay.co.uk/help/buying/paying-items/paying-tax-ebay-purchases?id=4771&st=12&pos=3&query=....

If you think that eBay has wrongly added VAT you need to take this up with eBay.
