VAT

I am a mezzanine floor seller and sell various items associated with this for example decking boards, staircases etc.  If I advertise my products excluding VAT is there a way that this gets added at checkout before final purchase?  Also am I best to include eBay selling fees for my item to cover costs?

Just want best advice so I am not out of pocket or that I am totally transparent with the customer.

Thanks for your help

VAT

All eBay prices must include VAT. You can show an invoice with the VAT separated, but that's all. If you make it clear in the description, business buyers will understand the VAT situation. It's not like you'll be selling to members of the public. We sell many items to businesses and they appreciate eBay prices include VAT, so we send on request an invoice with the VAT separated. Good luck with your business.

VAT

As above, the listing price must INCLUDE VAT, as you are listing to consumers

You cannot add VAT after the sale, as the contract of sale is for the item INCLUDING VAT.

eBay will suspend your account if you attempt to add VAT to the price afterwards

The law (and eBay rules) requires that prices shown to consumers must include VAT.

The only time VAT is added after the sale is when you sell to overseas, in which case Import VAT is charged on top of your VAT inclusive price, but this is added by eBay automatically at checkout.

You also cannot add eBay fees at checkout

In fact you cannot add ANYTHING at checkout

The price the buyer sees is the price they pay

Sellers cannot add fees or VAT on top of the advertised price

Buyers only pay the price on the listing.

You must include VAT and fees in the advertised sale price.

If you try to add fees or VAT at checkout buyers will give you negative feedback which will mess up your account, and eBay will suspend you from selling on the website permanently.

As mentioned eBay is mostly a site for consumer purchases so your prices must include VAT. You need to ensure you enter the applicable VAT rate (i.e. 20%) in the "VAT (optional) %" box so your VAT breakdown is displayed correctly.

It would be nice if eBay would let VAT-registered businesses at least have the option of seeing net selling prices but unfortunately they don't. Most businesses buying via eBay are well aware that all selling prices are displayed including VAT whilst eBay's fees for business sellers are displayed excluding VAT.

Where businesses are concerned eBay's fees are a cost so yes you will need to take them into consideration when calculating your selling prices. You also need to remember that eBay's fees are charged on the total amount the buyer pays including any shipping/postage you charge and any taxes eBay are responsible for charging and remitting.

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

That doesn't happen when a VAT registered UK seller sells something to the EU. Where a sale to the EU is concerned eBay removes the domestic (UK) VAT element and charges the buyer their applicable domestic (EU) VAT on top of the net selling price. At least, that is what happens when the item cost is less than €150 and/or the item was sold via eBay's Global Shipping Programme.

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.
