Refunding Orignal Postage Costs

Hi all, hope you're well. I'm a relatively new Business Seller, so still working things out. I'm fairly sure this has been asked but I couldn't find it in the community.

When issuing a refund after receiving a return, the original postage cost was included in the refund amount to the buyer. This seems unusual as it doesn't happen when you buy from a regular online retailer - you just get the amount for the item.

Is that just the way it goes? I know the buyer has to pay the return costs (if you choose to make that a policy), but as the seller do you just have to take the hit of the original postage?

Thanks very much.

Buyer gets back the full amount they paid and you take the hit on the postage

Actually the law says that all online retailers have to refund the original postage and the item cost, so ebay's processes are legal whereas it seems the online retailers you deal with are breaking the law.

The only exception is where the buyer has chosen enhanced delivery, when the seller can choose to just refund the basic delivery cost.

The law says that the buyer pays the return postage in a change of mind return, but the seller can choose to cover that.  Not as described returns are paid for by the seller.

So yes you do take the hit for the original postage as should all online sellers.
