Immediate refund on return to private seller...

So I received an item that had non-disclosed perished leather from a private seller who didn't offer returns. I opened a return as 'arrived damaged' and attached 5 photos. Thinking about it, I should probably have used ' not as described'. I used 'arrived damaged' as the item was damaged on arrival (but not by the delivery).  Anyway, the item was immediately refunded the second I pressed 'send' on my return request with no need to return the item.

Is this to do with simple delivery? Are all private seller returns now immediately refunded? And who by? Ebay or the seller? Or was it because it looked like a delivery error? Just curious...

I should add I bought on a different account to my selling one and it is in very good-standing. I hardly ever return items.

Firstly, yes,  you should have used NAD.

Was it Simple Delivery - were your postage options 'Standard Tracked' or  'Express Tracked', without naming a courier?

If so, then it was probably refunded straight away by ebay as you used the option for 'arrived damaged' rather than 'NAD', and so it would be an eBay refund.

Doesn't bode well for when word gets around that an 'arrived damaged' equals instant refund.

I would imagine a damaged case would be construed as a courier issue by eBay and be refunded under the BPF.

A not as described case would have been opened against, and refunded by, the seller.

You certainly did the seller a favour there.

Thanks for replies.

I agree I accidentally opened wrong return reason. And I agree - it doesn't bode well for when 'word gets around' about instant refunds... I guess ebay will only allow people so many instant refunds though?

Presumably both buyers and sellers will have (undisclosed) limits.  These may not have been determined yet - and may be a percentage or a fixed number.

I mean, if a private seller sells their private collection of 200 glass animals, packaging each one in a plastic bag with no protection - there must be a point at which eBay will refuse to take responsibility for another case of "arrived damaged, ears and tail broken off".

If it arrived damaged and was not described as damaged the system must determine it was "not as described".  If it was sold with a 0.99p start and no reserve then the seller places no value on it and won't want it back.
