The Golden Boys

Not the current crop of mercenaries who failed to turn up to the end of season games. I was thinking about it, and of the current squad there is only really Lloyd Doyley and Troy Deaney who would qualify for true Golden Boy status. Sadly, Troy will be sold this summer. Lloyd signed a new deal that means he can still dream of climbing the all time appearances table. He came up through the junior ranks and has been a regular first team player since 2001 making over 400 appearances for the club in the top two divisions. Although 6 players have better appearances records for the club, they all played a large number below the top two divisions.

That leads into a bargain purchase for me. I could not resist this for such a great price.

The Golden Boys HB w/dj 2001 - £9.99

Large format book and quite weighty. This is a sought after book even unsigned, but this book has 10 great signatures -

Oliver Phillips - author and Watford Observer legend who covered teh club for over 40 years until his retirement to France in 2005, but he still writes blogs for the Wobby.

Bobby Bell (sadly deceased 2007) - a Scottish right back who played for Watford between 1957 and 1965.

George Harris - London born, a popular winger who played for Watford between 1962 and 1966.

Maurice Cook (sadly deceased 2006) - Hemel born, was a popular striker for Watford between 1952 and 1958.

Mike Benning - Croxley born, was a popular outside right for Watford between 1956 and 1962.

Stewart Scullion - a Scottish winger who is still often talked about, and had two spells at Watford between 1966 and 1971 and 1973 to 1976.

Luther Blissett - nuff said really. Mr Watford - all time appearances record and all time goal scorer, plus an all round nice guy.

Nigel Gibbs - right back who, like Luther, bled Watford as a youth player, a professional from 1983 to 2002 playing over 400 games, and coached at the club from 2002 to 2006.

Tony Coton - regarded as Watford's greatest ever keeper, he played for the club between 1984 and 1990.

Tommy Mooney - cult hero striker who played over 250 games between 1994 and 2001.

Some great names, some I do not have on any format, and a couple I could never get. My best purchase for a while.
