As i am sure by now you will all know who it was that i visited on Friday:)
I found myself up in the wilds of Northumberland and decided to try Big Jack again. I never expect him to be home as i know he loves his fishing. Anyway, i drove down the very long drive that leads to the quiet little hamlet in which his cottage is situated, and walked up to his front door. I rang the bell, and under my breath i am saying "Please be in, Please be in":) Then the inner door opened and there he was. He opened the door, and before he could say anything i introduced myself and shook his hand, "Hello Mr Charlton, sorry to bother you but would you be kind enough to sign my copy of your autobiography?" " Of course i will, come in out of the rain" and he turned back into the house. "Errr i won't come in Sir as i have just been on site and my boots are covered in mud" AND they were lads, i had just been stood in 6" of the stuff. "Nonsense, i have the cleaner coming soon, it will give her something to do" he said smiling. I then followed him through the wet room and through the conservatory into the kitchen where there was a huge dining table and a view out of his window that anyone would die for. "What a lovely garden you have, Mr Charlton" "Yes, we like the garden, its a bit large though". "I'm surprised to catch you at home Sir, i expected you to be down at the river" "I am thinking about going down a bit later, but wev'e had rain all day, and the river is about 6" higher than it usually is" "They say it will clear up after lunch, so i might pop down later for an hour":)
He then sat down at the dining table and opened my book. "I have a pen here" i said. "It's ok i have loads of them, people keep sending me them";) I then asked "Would you please sign "For the love of Egg and Chips" He then looked at me and smiled, and said "I like Egg and Chips" "So do i" I said 🙂 "If you recall, that was the meal you fancied on the way home from the 66 final" "Ahh yes, it was ha ha ha" He then signed my book as i asked and said "There you are" He then asked "What do you do?" "I am a service technician for a plant hire company" "Oh, i see. My Brother Gordon used to be in the Plant Hire game, he delivered heavy lifting equipment". To which i replied "Oh right" I then said "Do you see much of Bobby?" "Not seen Bobby for a while now" he said. " I went to see Maurice Setters yesterday" Jack replied "Really, where?" "At his home in B*****, he's a really nice chap" " I keep meaning to ring Maurice and invite him here for a meal, but i keep forgetting. How is he? He's just had an operation i think" "He is fine, he says he's still taking the pills" To which Jack said "WE ARE ALL STILL TAKING THE PILLS:)" We then walked back to the wetroom and thats when i noticed the trail of mud from my boots. I didn't say anything about it though lol:) When we reached the door i asked if he would allow me to take a photo of us together, he said "Yes of course you can, do you have someone with you to take it?" "No, i have a camera phone that allows me to take photo's alone." I then took out my phone and took the photo:) We then shook hands and he said "It was nice to see you and drive safely" "I will and it has been a real pleasure to meet you Sir" Goodbye"

Great story and a great fella too. When I was about 10 years old my dad took me up to Elland Road to see Leeds training. I waited for all the players afterwards clutching my little autograph book (which I still have). Unfortunately Revie, Bremner and Giles all considered themselves in too much of a hurry to sign for me, but this disapointment was more than tempered by just how nice "Big Jack" was. He stood talking to us for about 10 minutes. A great fella then, and he still is.

ha ha !! I was having a good old chuckle at the muddy boot prints when I first read this last night, but my missus said she would have killed both you and Big Jack (and gave me "the look" for laughing - ha ha) if it had been her house. Great knockknock Paul - Big Jack sounds like one of the toppest of top men.

Well done Paul. That's a fantastic story and I'm so glad you finally caught Jack at home. No you know, if it's raining, he's more likely to be at home. I bet his cleaner had a few choice words though!
