Autographs for Investment.

Spent some time over Christmas enlarging a short guide i put together on autographs for investment for a magazine.

I get asked more and more about this subject, and now have a number of customers who are buying purely for this reason.

One thing i would say which i think we all know anyway, is that when you are looking for future investment potential, you should ignore your own personal likes or dislikes. As an example, not everyone will buy a Maggie Thatcher signed item, simply because of their own thoughts, which is madness as she is one of the best investments you could make at this moment.

Please take a look at the article, its here on eBay, do let me have some feedback, and please do vote at the end.

This forum would also be a good place to make your own suggestions as to future investment signatures.

Since he stopped signing, Ringo's signature has risen by probably 100% in value. Paul's is an obvious one, find one at the right price and its money in the bank!

Problem is that most genuine Macca sigs get removed from ebay as fake! work that one out, as i can't!

Thanks for the info, Garry. I had thought about Valentino Rossi or some of the F1 drivers such as Schumacher. Just out of curiosity, would artists such as Tracy Emin be a good investment or are they only worth anything if on a piece of art?

Can't help with the footie, not my game at all, but my advice is that there are few that will ever gain much in value. Most have been so overdone with signings etc that their signature is never going to have much value. The 66 boys will always be of value, but they will never reach the heights of Moore!

Artists are different, and they are certainly worth looking at. Even Rolf Harris, who is now a very popular artist is already very collectable. I have a few of his sketchs which i am hanging on to, as they are already worth several hundred £'s

Great article Garry, very interesting reading although i thought it went a bit pear shaped in the middle with this line; "or any of the Apollo astronaughts, especially those who have walked on the surface of the moon" Universal Studio's really do have alot to answer for.

Garry - one subject that seems to come up on forums around the web from time to time, is how to safely store autographed items.

What storage materials are available for common formats (photos, record cards, trading cards, letters, etc)?

Where they can they be obtained from?

Tips for more specialist items (balls, books, etc).

Advise about what harms ink, photos.

We all have different views, but the recognised top dealers must have some sound knowledge of this. I collect a lot of autographed books, so use acid free comic/mag bags for example to protect the books.

That is a good one and i do have the answers! Its something we have discussed before, but one solid article covering the lot might juts eb the answer.

Iin the past the posts get distorted and eventulay lost amongst all the others, so one article may be the answer.

As for the comments about the moon landings! I find it hard to accept that anyone in their right mind could even consider the fact that they could be a hoax! Although i understand that your comment is quite likely tongue in cheek!

Give me a couple of weeks, and i should be able to get together an article on the subject of storage.

Of course i would never infer the moon landing was a hoax...who'd think such a thing eh? I mean, who could ever question why that american flag that Buzz & co. planted was flapping in the wind on the moon where there is no air, huh? ;\

Great shout on the autograph protection/preservation idea, will look forward to reading that

Good shout Nigel...and what about Insurance cover? Each year our collections grow yet how many have, if any, Insurance to cover their entire collection if god forbid their was a house fire.
