The European Commission has recently launched an EU Enforcement Action Plan regarding restrictions on the sale of Plastic Food Contact Materials (FCMs) in the EU.
Plastic FCMs containing bamboo and other plant-based additives not authorised in accordance with Regulation (EU) 10/2011 cannot be sold in the EU.
In addition, bamboo products containing plastics cannot be marketed as being made of ‘bamboo’ or labelled as ‘natural’, ‘eco-friendly’, ‘environmentally friendly’, ‘recyclable’, ‘biodegradable’, ‘compostable’ as under the EU regulations these claims are false and misleading.
These restrictions are in place as the use of bamboo and other unauthorised ground plant materials in plastic FCM may represent a public health risk.
UK sellers looking to sell FCMs made of bamboo to the EU on eBay can only offer products in compliance with the Regulation (EU) 10/2011.
