A very sad day for rock fans everywhere, one of the world's great musical innovators, will be sadly missed for a long time. Best not to dwell on the loss but to remember the amazing legacy he leaves behind him.

I said I wasn't going to watch the news at lunchtime......... but I did........

I've spent most of the morning looking through about 500 Bowie songs and I can't recall the one I had running through my head. About half past eight, Sky News went and played part of Life on Mars and what I was going to play somehow was wiped out of my mind.

Now then, only a few Bowie songs would make it on to my playlist, but today for some reason his death has hit home probably because of my own recent brush with death.

I can't listen to any more, I'm going out.... I may be some time ...... but I may not......

It's life Jim, but not as WE know it.
Live long and prosper.

I tried to think of someone who had as much influence on music, fashion and art while I was growing up - and quite simply there isn't anyone!!

I was never a huge fan, but I was a fan of his music. When I was at art college one of my friends went to see him on the Alladin Sane Tour - always remember him telling me of all the fans with their 'Alladin Sane zig zag' make up, getting wet in the rain and it running down their faces as they waited to go into the concert.

I listened this morning to his final album Blackstar - and while it has had good reviews for me it was 'dark and morose'. Something I shall never play again, as I see it as an acknowledgement of him in a dark place facing death, - and quite frankly thats not how i want to remember David Bowie. It really did make me quite sad.

RIP David Bowie - you truly were a great star, a musician who was unique and original - I don't think you will ever be eclipsed!

I remember singing this to my kids just after my youngest was born, a very sweet song and a reminder of happy times.

Thank you David.

Understandable feelings at such a sad time CD. When someone so influential who has been part of our lives for such a long time passes on, it brings the reality of our own mortality a little closer to home.

David Bowie has been around for most of our adult lives, his career kicked off just as the Beatles era was drawing to a close and his career has never stood still. He appealed to so many kids in the early years not just because he was different from anyone who had gone before but he made being different acceptable to so many. His constant musical reinventions over the years were never for the purpose of popularity but because standing still was sheer boredom to him. I didn't like everything he produced but I always admired him for doing what pleased him rather than being a slave to the industry.

Anyone who has bought his albums and CDs or been to his live shows are part of the legacy he leaves behind. I only got to see him live three times in almost fifty years but I'm so happy to have been able to witness a true legend.  He couldn't have been more different from the general idea of what we normally regard as a rock star. He brought an originality, sophistication and intellectual depth to popular music that no-one has equalled before or since.

Sad though these last couple of days have been, I'll always be grateful that David Bowie and I were around at the same time. Smiley Happy
