On the way home from work one evening I was on a crowded train when, a few stops further on a young mother with her two year old daughter got on. She was one of these children who had the knack of holding everybody's attention. With a carriage full of adults, all eyes and ears were on her. Suddenly, struggling off her mother's lap, she decided to sit next to me, and stared up intensely at my face and beard. She the struggled back on to her mother's lap, pointed at me, and with the upmost sincerity asked in a loud enough fashion for everybody to hear:"Mummmeee, when I grow old (I was fifty at the time), will I go bald as well?" An ear splitting roar filled the entire carriage. Her mother just buried her face in her hands. By the time I got home I was anything but tired - she'd long since stolen my heart.
