There seems to be lots and lots of fake artefacts for sale but eBay do nothing when you tell them.

So many fake artefacts on eBay. Simple research for the admin staff could prevent this. Think eBay only cares about profit not their customers getting ripped off.

eBay can't see the item in real life and can't rely on just one or two reports (after all, these could be from a competitor or somebody who is mistaken), so have a 30 Day Money Back Guarantee in place.

If a buyer receives an item that's not as described they can return it (the seller pays for return cost) and get a full refund. They may also leave feedback to warn other potential buyers. This indicates that it's a verified purchase and that they have seen the item in question.

adding to the advice already given -

I very much doubt if "anyone" can identify fake items [save perhaps in their special areas of expertise] merely from a listing.   As said by @*vyolla* if someone buys a fake they open a "not as described" case.  If the seller makes a habit of that there will be markers on their account for masses of cases and eBay will - no doubt - sanction/ban.

When will buyers realise that eBay doesn't check listings??

The user agreement is clear that eBay makes sellers entirely responsible for their lisitngs.

eBay even warns buyers that "they do not guarantee the existence, quality, safety or legality of items advertised, or the truth or accuracy of descriptions".  Would you buy from a shop that stated this?

Buying on eBay is NOT like the shops. eBay is a jungle. There is always a risk when buying from unknown sellers here. However eBay does provide a strong money back gaurantee to buyers - but they need to read the conditions carefully.
