Anyone help with refund qusestion?

On my listing i offer returns if buyer pays for return Postage. I tried to refund the cost of the item only and there was no option to do that so I have had to refund the whole lot.(postage included). Doesnt seem fair. I am now out of pocket but the customer will be delighted. Does anyone know a way round this . Other than offer NO RETURNS accepted.

If you say no returns then buyers can simply invent a reason to say it was not as described, then you'd have to pay their postage to return the goods as well as refunding all the original payment.

If they just message to ask for a change of mind/doesn't fit return then you can refund item price only when goods come back, but if they actually open a return request then payment is put on hold and you can't issue partial yourself, you'd need to phone paypal and ask them to release the partial amount back to the buyer.
