I have an item for sale and have listed Paypal as my payment method but a potential buyer has asked me if he can pay by cheque. Are there any problems with this? Obviously I would not mail the item until the cheque has cleared in my bank.

Nothing to stop you accepting a cheque and as you say, you would not post until the cheque has cleared the bank.  The transaction may take a little longer and the buyer will have no buyer protection if they do not pay by Paypal but if that's what they want to do then I don't see a problem.
