I am a new registered member about to make my first purchase on ebay. I do not however have a PayPal account. Is it possible for me to just use my credit card?

You can only pay direct by debit or credit card if the seller is a registered business and accepts merchant transactions this way. You would need to contact them to arrange payment.
The other, and probably better, option is to pay with your credit card through Paypal as a guest and that option should be available when you go to checkout on eBay.
This will not give you any buyer protection on eBay but will give you much the same protection through Paypal.
