Just tried opening the app on my android phone and get the message "this version is no longer supported. Please update to the latest version". Pressing the "update" goes to Google play but the only options are "Uninstall" or "Open" - no option to update. Pressing "Cancel" closes the app.
I suspect they pushed a new version of the app to deal with the changes introduced overnight but something has gone wrong somewhere.
Anyone else got this issue?

Yep, many are facing this. Our Community Manager has let us know this:
The latest eBay app version is no longer compatible with android 9 and below. It actually requires OS android 10 and above. If you have another device with android 10 and above you can check the most recently updated eBay app version and see if you can view images.
If you are using OS android 10 and above and still have issues with viewing images on the app please let me know. State what version you use and type of device and I'll have it looked into further by tech.

Thanks Tressygirl
Just checked my phone is Android 9.1.
Guess it's just the website for me from now on, but from your comment about "many are facing this" I guess I am not alone. Maybe they will rework the update to make it backward compatible but I doubt it.

Same for me. I have a Samsung Galaxy 7 with Android 8. Is it possible to update or do I just delete the app and use the website.
I have uninstalled the app 3 times and reinstalled from Google Play Store. It still has the same update message and thinks I've got 2023 version, although it's the latest version.

Play Store will only show the latest version of the app that is compatible with the device and Android version installed. You might be able to update your Android version by following the instructions here but the latest Android version officially available is typically dictated by the manufacturer of the device (i.e. manufacturer planned obsolescence). In many cases it is possible to install a newer version of Android on a device the manufacturer no longer supports but this involves an unofficial (but not illegal) update path.
Android versions 11.0 and below no longer receive security updates from Google; I have no idea if this has anything to do with eBay's decision. Interestingly Android 11.0 will stop receiving security updates from tomorrow but eBay is continuing to support Android versions 10.0 and higher.
On a side note I'm amazed anyone uses the app as their primary means of listing and managing their eBay account. I have the app but I mostly have it installed for notification alerts; I do anything serious on a PC or laptop. Maybe my fingers are just too big but I struggle even replying to messages on a mobile device.

Further info:
It's a Galaxy S7 not 7.
The message I get when trying to access the ebay app is:
We’re sorry, this version of the app is no longer supported. Please take a moment to update to the latest version.
I tried but it won't update.
It says: Last Updated 21 June 2023, even after reinstalling 3 times today 04/ 02/ 2025

Please don't shoot the messenger!
I am a member like yourself just passing on information I read on a thread from a Community Manager explaining the issue, so could not answer that question for you.
A member reported they removed the app and used the browser version , and that worked well for them.
I have never used the app , I do understand its good points , but it's too limited for me, and seemingly attracts all sorts of glitches and blocks, it's an old laptop for me , she serves me well! 🤗

See above; the latest Android version Samsung made (officially) available for the S7 is 8.0. You cannot install the latest version of the eBay app as it requires Android 10.0 or newer.
Your device will only install the latest version of the eBay app that is supported by the operating system; eBay have chosen not to support this older version of the app any more.

Thanks folks.
I woke up this morning (always a bonus at my age) and found 'Mobile Data' switched on?
I'm tethering at the moment and always switch 'Mobile Data' and 'Hot Spot' off before I go to bed. Finding 'Mobile Data' on was a bit suspicious. I can't remember why I went to the eBay app but finding it inaccessible, made me think I had been hacked. I don't use the app but dislike the thought of being hacked.
I am annoyed to be forced into an upgrade. I'm only on a pension and have to watch the pennies.
I appreciate being supported by fellow users. Thank you.

You think you've got problems. I've only got Android 8. I think it's bye bye eBay app.

Not the end of world losing the app for me more an inconvenience.
I suspect like most people I use the web site for 'serious' work managing listing and my account. However the app was useful for things like getting sales notification late in the evening while watching TV, checking bids on auctions that were about to end while at the gym or checking tracking to see if evri/yodel had actually picked up the packages I dropped off at the store.
The other useful thing was using the app for 2-factor authentication for log-in, guess I will have to rely on the SMS PIN code now.

Perhaps sales are down in the mobile phones category ...

This does appear to be annoying. In reality, no update actually exists for Android 9.
