App not working - update required

Just tried opening the app on my android phone and get the message "this version is no longer supported. Please update to the latest version".  Pressing the "update" goes to Google play but the only options are "Uninstall" or "Open" - no option to update. Pressing "Cancel" closes the app.

I suspect they pushed a new version of the app to deal with the changes introduced overnight but something has gone wrong somewhere.

Anyone else got this issue?

Re: App not working - update required

All of these updates on whatever tablet/phone we're using these days are just another massive scam in a world of endless scamming.

I had to buy a new ipad 2 years ago because mine wouldn't update past ios 12...can someone please tell me what exactly is now So advanced on the current ebay app that is any different to how I was using it 2 years ago...?...it's a shopping app *bleep*.

Re: App not working - update required

Same problem here. Restarted my device, uninstalled and reinstalled app, signed in to be told every time that this version of the app is no longer supported. Go to Huawei App Store and it says the app is not available in my region. Can’t use the internet site either on my phone as it wants to redirect me to the app.Very frustrating.

Re: App not working - update required

Lots of users affected and I can’t afford to upgrade my phone. Not happy and Ebay and its sellers  will not be getting my business. Not a good business move on your part.

Yep, we are in an age where we are all supposed to  'Reduce, Recycle, Re-use' and be mindful about our 'carbon foot-print' etc ....

And all the time we have to up-grade, up-date and consume, consume, consume, ...just to tread water and stay where we are in life 😞.

Huawei devices are unlikely to be able to run the new version of the eBay app. This is due to Donald Trump banning American firms (like Google) from trading with Huawei during his previous administration. Huawei's Android-derived EMUI operating system has not received any Android security updates since 2019 as a result and Google Play Store is unable to even be installed on Huawei devices manufactured after 2019.

Uninstall the app completely (don't reinstall it) then try logging in from the browser; that should work.

Re: App not working - update required

How many people have wasted time trying to reinstall this app.

I wasted 3-4 hours on this futile journey. The absolute minimum would have been to be informed in advance.

I can't afford to upgrade my phone. It's hard enough trying to keep warm.

I have no connection with eBay or work for them, apart from being a customer. If you contact eBay, be firm and express your feelings. Please bear in mind, the people at the other end are employees, just like you and me (until I retired). Please be polite and respectful. You’re more likely to be listened to.

Re: App not working - update required

I feel for you.

I too, have spent yonks trying to reinstate Ebay on my android without success. I've been an Ebay customer since 2004 and it looks like I will only be able to access it through a computer from now on.

I'm not sure what operating system I'm running on my current mobile phone, but as it's a Samsung S10, I wouldn't have thought the operating system was too old.

Keep warm. 🤗

The S10 should be able to be updated to Android 12.0. What does it say if you follow these instructions?

Re: App not working - update required

To everyone affected by this - make sure to leave a 1 star review about it in the Play Store, show them in numbers how many this outrageous decision is affecting. That's the only hope for getting this reversed.

That should be on Android 11.

Re: App not working - update required

Everything I've read tells me Android 8 is the most advanced version I can have on a Galaxy S7.

Re: App not working - update required

eBay have now posted an official announcement - why this wasn't posted well in advance is a mystery!

Re: App not working - update required

It would have  been better if ebay had let all user know in advance of this  update rather than many  of us having  to chase around trying to get info. so i will delete the app  and  just use the laptop . but as someone suggested there could have been some form of back to back compatability

Correct; this is because Samsung never released a newer version of Android for it. The device is perfectly capable of running Android 10.0 - this is the minimum version required for the new eBay app. However, Samsung released the device in March 2016 and considered it "discontinued" in April 2017 so no new operating system updates were made available for S7 devices from that date.

You should really be shouting at Samsung for deliberately building obsolescence into their devices.

this is one of the things that makes me so angry about the 'consume, consume, consume' society that we've all sleep-walked into...

Re: App not working - update required

To be fair to Samsung their latest premium phones (e.g. Galaxy S line) now come with 7 years of Android OS and security updates so better than what they used to offer.  You will then have at least several years after it is on the last OS version before app support starts to be withdrawn so probably at least 12 years of useable life which I think it not too bad.

Re: App not working - update required

I've got the same problem, I tried emailing, but got a reply saying this email address is not monitored. Tried switching phone off, uninstall, and it's still not working.

Re: App not working - update required

Can anyone predict the future?

What would be a future proof Samsung phone to get, which can be updated to a high enough Android version that won't need upgrading for a few years. I know this is an impossible task but just a finger in the wind estimate would be a starting point.

I can't afford £500-£1000 for a new phone. Most of my previous phones have been £5-£20. The S7 was the most expensive phone I ever bought at £100 used. It still does most of the things I need. It was top of the range bees knees, when I was working. That's not strictly true, my first ever mobile was an NEC 9A, Half a house brick and about £1,000,000 a second to run. I think it was about £350 but can't remember. It got charged to the business.

I also agree with an earlier post. My laptop is not suitable for Win 11. So in October it will be obsolete. A new laptop or Ubantu? I don't even know if it still exists. This is what you get for being loyal customers of Microsoft, Samsung and eBay etc.
