I've received several messages from a user that claimed £1,000 was accidently payed to my PayPal account when trying to buy a laptop from me via a PayPal invoice, and they're trying to get me to make a bank transfer for that £1,000, claiming it's for an important surgery. I've recently realised that I've been swindled out of the laptop and £500 thanks to some fraudlulent emails claiming to be from PayPal, which said that the money was needed to "upgrade my account" to allow the money that was from the original transaction to be credited to my account, which never actually happened. I've already notified PayPal, the bank I made the initial transfer and ActionFraud about this.
While I've realised that what I've done was idiotic, could anyone please help me with how to handle this situation?
I do hope you posted the MX500 1TB that you recently sold via Royal Mail Special Delivery to make sure you're covered by insurance. If you sent it by normal post you're asking for trouble as the criminal gangs you've been warned about can scam you out of cheaper items too. They can see that you have the wrong postage price and will claim non receipt to get a refund.
Anything over £50 should go SD. Have a look at Royal Mail's delivery prices.
Criminal gangs trawl Ebay and the web, looking for sellers of electronics and other valuable items they can easily shift, and they especially target new and inexperienced sellers.
You fell for their scam/s before, so the criminal gang naturally sees you as an easy target and is having another go.
Apart from what you've already done, I assume that you also sensibly checked your device/s for malware and changed all your passwords after the first scam, and haven't clicked on any links in emails since...? If so, just ignore and delete the messages, and add the senders' Ebay IDs to your Blocked Bidders List.
And if you haven't already done so, do an urgent web search for 'staying safe online'. It's up to you to be aware and keep yourself safe from scammers - no-one can do it for you.
