Well, I've stupidly become a victim of a scam and have now lost the device I was selling and am £600 out of pocket. It's the first time its happened on Ebay and I feel really disappointed for letting it happen. I received a message from ebay yesterday to advise that security concerns had been raised with the the account of the member I had agreed a deal with and that any further communications should be "undertaken with caution".

I had advertised my spare mobile device for sale and received an offer from a supposed "buyer" who firstly asked me what I thought he should pay for the item as he didn't know how valuable the device was.

I gave him a price; he responded to say he was fine with that and asked for my Paypal email address to pay the money into. I stupidly provided this; I then received an email from "Paypal" which said that my Paypal account had been credited but the payment was on hold until the mail tracking number had been provided. Thinking the email was genuine, I provided it. So the device was sent and no money received. I've now lost that device (I can't imagine I'll ever get it back) and am considerably out of pocket. I've reported to ebay, Paypal and the police, but what can they do? When I thought the device had genuinely been sold, I ended the listing. Paypal have no record of a transaction.

I did check the members profile on ebay - they had been a member for a number of years and had a positive rating. I'm at a loss as to what I can do next and if I will ever get any money back.

the vehicle scam is one of the oldest and as there's no protection on eBay for vehicles it relies on the total cooperation of the buyer to work.

Unfortunately you handed over money for a vehicle you never saw etc and that's what they need to happen.

How did you pay?

I've been the victim of a scam, recently i sold a graphics card for £910 and then the guy complained i sent the "wrong item" and returned something completely different and broken. I used PayPal to receive the payment and was a bit suspicious of him from the start so i took the money out my PayPal right away and im glad i did so because they now have placed that money i already took on a virtual "hold" so my account went into a -£883 balance and then i sold another item for £150 and it went straight into that -£883 and brought it down to -£733. So my PayPal has been left like this now for over 1 month and still heard nothing back from eBay? I even reported it to the police in Scotland and England and still no reply or anything. They said they would fix it withint 48 hours? eBay hold's onto your money WAY too long when dealing with these things so be prepared for a long bumpy ride.
