Get into schools and teach our kids, fed up with the double standards, you ARE on good money and good pay and pensions, god knows how many weeks a year holidays, you can afford to take your kids away on holiday out of term time, I can't,Smiley Indifferent. any of you who went on strike today should look around in the playground and count yourselves lucky !

Well said.

You know the cheeky sods at my daughter's school sent me a text saying she was required to go in today for a couple of hours for concert practice and then a performance this evening. So they close the school, have us running around sorting out child care etc. and then have the cheek to expect us to arrange things to suit their concert. **bleep**!

I WAS a teacher ( thankfully not now ) and never ever agreed with strike action ....never went on strike ..

Always took my own children on holiday in term time ( no option to do otherwise ).

It would appear that teachers do get long holidays and shorter days but in fact a teachers day does not end when the pupils go home and much of their " holiday " time is spent on preparation and on school premises ( mine certainly was ) ,

However EVERYBODY has been affected by the recession...everybody has had to make sacrifices ...my own retirement date has been moved twice .....

I no longer teach .......it sapped the life out of me.......but my first priorities were always the children .....

Teachers can work up to 60hrs a week, their pensions are being slashed, and held back.

They have lost since the Lib-Cons came in, about 9% of their earnings in real terms

and the MPs who are moaning are getting an 11% payrise

Tory MPs, talking about, the vote not being representative, well they were voted in power, by only  40% of the People who voted (in England)

btw --  in Total, they got the votes of less than a 30% of the electorate

They don't have a mandate of the populace

My pay rise 1.7% 10p an hour. My holidays 6 weeks . My retirement age 68 my pension amount £20 per week. I think most people are in the same boat are we striking no. They have had it good for a long time with their gold plated pensions. Now they are like the rest of us in the real world.

I understood it was a national strike, with airports, cemeteries and several other things affected, not just teachers?.

Considering they are Teachers, I find it a bit depressing that they still haven't managed to grasp the basic mathematics; as to just what a mess this country is in....financially.  Now I understand that people NEVER like to take the medicine, which is required to rectify a problem, but to actually want to put the people back in power, who presided over the problem, is depressingly stupid.  In mitigation, it is galling ( to say the least ) when people, who didn't actually directly cause the problem, are told they must "tighten their belts" ; while those who did, are still picking up 1 Million Pound bonuses.

Since when has any UK government had a mandate of the populace? Can't remember a time myself when a government has gained more than 50% of the vote!

I don't blame teachers for defending their own corner but don't expect me to feel sorry for them and don't expect me to hold back with the criticism when their actions effect myself and others.

Yes they work hard and I believe all the stuff about how much holiday they get is a bit of a smoke screen, but they still do OK, are comparatively well paid, have good pension provision, a comparatively secure profession but basically some don't seem to appreciate how well their bread is buttered!!!

Try experiencing being made redundant several times over the past 10 years then spending time in contract work and temp jobs with no pension provision, minimal holiday provision and barely a living wage!

Finally we need to get over this idea that public sector employees should be put on a pedestal and regarded as some sort of super heroes who are the lifeblood of society. Teachers, Nurses, Firemen etc., yes they may provide some good services but at the end of the day it's a job, their job in their chosen profession. I've worked in industry dealing with the maintenance of the sewerage networks, I bet people in that industry would get much sympathy if they went on strike but people would soon moan when the sh!t hit the fan!!!

We are assuming that the recycling guys were on strike yesterday as they didn't come and pick up our recycling, never mind it is all over the road now so they don't need to bother

My niece is a teacher, who teaches Maths to14/15 year olds. Some of the things she tells me about her job are just unbelievable. Just like Millielilac above, she is having the life sucked out of her. She is a good dedicated teacher, but is on the point of quitting. One of the biggest problems is discipline..the lack of. She is abused on a daily basis, but can't do a thing about it, and gets no support from her Head. They may be well paid, but no amount of money would be enough to make me do the job that she is doing. Education in this country is in a real mess.

So they should be striking for the ability to do something about poor discipline rather than joining the rest of the mob moaning about pay and pensions! If their wages were doubled would they worry so much about discipline? I can understand there may be many reasons why the job is not a very likeable one but if that's the case I urge people leave. I don't particularly like my job at the moment, does not pay much and at times is soul destroying, but I have to plough on until I can secure something better, and there's many in a similar situation!

People say things like "no amount of money would be enough for me to do that job" as if those who do that job are some king of martyrs. They are no different to the rest of us!

Astro.........It's not the education in this Country that's in a real mess.........it's the people !! It's THEM that makes your Niece's job so hard and they can strike all they want, but until the Dreggs of this Country realise that there's more to bringing up children, than just copulating like some Dog and thinking "That's it " then it will NEVER improve..........and no amount of extra money or time will change that fact.

General complaints about the standard of teaching, shortage of teachers, teachers leaving the profession in record numbers, reduced number of suitable candidates.

Obvious solution:-  Freeze pay for two years and in the third offer a below inflation rise of 1% to some.

Doh!
