eBay community? Nostalgia!

Just got all nostalgic for the old eBay and remembered James phoning me up and trying to tell me off!

Anybody got any more nostalgia?

Didn't he have a sig "I Pink, therefore I am"?

What was that all about?

Perhaps he was a descendant of Descartes.

Actually, I always thought that was a really inspired sig.  Also "veni, vidi, pinki" was excellent, IMVVHO!

Re: eBay community? Nostalgia!

Whether his sig was inspired or not he will be judged on the quality of his Moderator skills which for those in doubt are shown below.

Re: eBay community? Nostalgia!

I interpreted "I Pink, therefore I am" like this:-

The community managers used to post text in Pink so were referred to as "Pink"s. So, he "Pinks", OK so far?

"Therefore I am......" I took that to mean "I am Pink".......  "Pink" people bat for the other side.........

Right or wrong, it just shows that you have to be careful what you say as something means one thing to one person and something quite different to another?

Well, I have to say I've never thought of those as functions of moderators on boards like this.

And, anyway, he was a Community Manager, not a moderator.  And whilst I disagreed with a million things he did and was driven to despair by his intransigence, he had the right to do the job as he thought best, taking into account pressures from his managers up the line.

Was he positioned in the most effective place on the continuum between LW at one end and us at the other to keep it all balanced? I would say not ... but I'm only seeing things from this side.

CD, anything can be looked at in a multitude of ways and text will never mean the same to everyone who reads it.  For me, it was simply clever word play and I like that in a sig.

Re: eBay community? Nostalgia!

He (King James) actually blocked my buying and selling IDs from posting on the boards, even though I'd never used them for that purpose. I had no intentions of doing so with either, which is why I registered this one. Not a clue about the workings of eBay, so how he managed to execute this task, is way beyond my thinking, but he did, and the exclusion still stands to this day. This was the only occasion he managed to condescend to furnish me with a reply, and was when I asked him why he'd done this. His response was as I said earlier, off-hand, curt, blunt, and didn't in effect provide me with a meaningful reply.

I took it to mean - although he didn't actually say so - simply because he could.

Happy days !

Mister EMB

Re: eBay community? Nostalgia!

I know that being a moderator can't be an easy job and not everyone is cut out for it. To keep everyone happy isn't easy.

But yeah, I think between the mods, the trolls and some other button pushers the "old" forums were destroyed.

People were accused of things they were never guilty of and this turned very ugly. Putting people up against each other, sowing distrust and people started leaving.

It's a shame. The RT never really became again what it was and maybe it's a sign of the times....Too PC, too much twisting and lying, no trust, no common sense and less freedom of speech.

I'm still here though and probably will be until they close the boards.

Re: eBay community? Nostalgia!

Glad I had gone before James' time, then. Dai used to take the rip out of the then mods, but it was friendly banter and when Bev went off to have a baby, it seems that was when moderation started to be less amicable....there was no report button back then.

Harry, I agree the old forums were destroyed.  The causes were complex and clearly a lot went on that most of us know little or nothing of.

James had a very difficult job to do. I remember thinking that his job was akin to keeping a classroom of full of ADHD pupil in order and failing miserably.

I wasn't used to internet communication and couldn't believe how some would be treated.

Re: eBay community? Nostalgia!

Yes I agree the difficulties were at times immense, making the task of moderation very difficult. Such behaviours require a special skill and inspired management. I suppose I never saw those traits in the CM sadly his chosen way of dealing with posters fanned the flames to the point that even the most passive indivduals became animated.

I agree with Harry too, there is a growing PC movement inventing rules which are alien to many from my generation, that in itself doesn't make it wrong but while we fight racism, homophobia and the plethora of other minority interests this should not be force fed and imposed on those who don't have a viscious tendancy but do have a sense of humour which is of it's time. For heavens sake we will all die soon enough at least let us go without a metre of gaffa tape stuck to our mouths.

Great thread Scunner x

When I first found Q&A there was a long running thread going on about a German (I think) seller being really nasty to a buyer. I think the buyer was just a young girl and I couldn't believe how vile the seller was. The thread went on for weeks and I was totally gripped by it.

I lurked for ages after that and got to know all the regs from a distance and then finally plucked up the courage to post. Meshenti was the first poster to speak to me and I was completely hooked from then on in.

I've tried to escape loads of  times over the years but I always end up coming back even though the boards nowadays are so mind-numbingly dull.
