When does democracy become.......

When does Democracy become mob rule?

Failing that, when does mob rule become democracy?

Democracy is supposed to be the rule of the people and that's usually decided by the majority supporting the same idea?

I'm particularly thinking about the case of Ched Evans and the statement made by the chairman of Sheffield United that Ched Evans was prevented from playing there by mob rule (otherwise reported as "mob-like behaviour").

Now it seems that Oldham Athletic are considering offering him a place and there's been reports that they won't be swayed by any similar protest. A bit insensitive that isn't it considering the many recent reports concerning Oldham and Rochdale abuses?

She was described by the receptionist as being very drunk on arrival, McDonald on leaving said to the same receptionist that she was in a bad condition and needed looking after. Her condition on awakening indicated she had been in a poor state .The trial judge commented much the same.
You have to accept, that they heard all the evidence, not just snippets from Evans website

she sent messages the next day

That's simply not correct - not even what evans own site said
There's nothing of substance to support the authenticity or context to those supposed tweets, which Evans own website claims were posted about 5 months after the assault
The cps decided what if any charges were to be brought from interviewing those concerned, the victim had no recollection of events beyond a certain time

It was reported that Evans sister had asked for the victims a/c to be 'hacked'
both mother and sister have social media a/cs though his mothers alternates between private/public.Evans cousin was one of the 9 out of 6000 who posted the victims identity online and were later charged
The DCI in charge of the investigation said he would have liked to have prosecuted more, but resources available to him were insufficient to do so

The 'hate mail' as you call it was /is serious enough for the police to provide a new identity, remove all past traces of the victim, not once, but several times - something only normally available in witness protection programmes and cases like Thompson Venables, seldom if ever for such victims, such is the seriousness of threats

As for OAFC my understanding is there is no police action/complaint resulting from the alleged comment made re an OA director, though it was quickly condemned by campaigners on face value
I have seen nothing of the same from Evans supporters condemning large numbers of similar and worse highly graphic threats against legitimate legal peaceful protesters
There have been now hundreds of such threats physical and otherwise against campaigners, mainly but not exclusively by Evans supporters/football 'fans'

The question of consent or lack of it was established from the evidence presented in court
Those judging Evans do so on the basis he's a convicted rapist - that's a legal fact. Its entirely possible that hes a serial rapist, but that, like suggesting he's really innocent is mere speculation. Im sure for certain elements regardless of evidence he would always be innocent because some, particularly in some cases the chav element, would wish it so, but its no more than a wish

Evans has had the best of British justice his future father in law can buy
including a review by the Lord Chief Justice and two other senior appeal court judges,as well as single judge on first application. He remains a convicted rapist. The ccrc is just another last straw to clutch on to having used up his quota. His prospective f.i.l appears to be willing to table 2 million to tempt a club into hiring him. No offender on release has anywhere near that kind of support in general, and face considerable difficulties in rehabilitation, none of which Evans has to face. His victim has had to leave her father and siblings, and the victim remains unable to return to her remaining family

The PFA and football have made efforts to remove certain types of behaviour from the game, with some success. At the moment Taylor looks out of touch and myopic regarding some forms of behaviour.
Public positions come with public responsibilities. Most have to forfeit those on conviction
Currently football remains an exception to that

Greater Manchester Police today confirmed NO complaints of threats have been received from OAFC

Chedwyn Evans maintains his absolute innocence and his family, friends and many who know the true facts of the case believe that his conviction was a gross miscarriage of justice. They are confident in their submission.

I wonder how much "damage" the Evans fiasco will have done?

I expect there to be some "rules" introduced about conduct off the field by the PFA and there might be something introduced at club level allowing clubs to ditch players who indulge in conduct which leads to adverse publicity.

The saga wasn't helped by those insisting "He's served his time......." He hasn't, he might be "out" but he's still liable to recall to prison if he commits any further offence.

Now, was this "Mob Rule" or was it the public excercising their democratic right to express their distaste about someone using the internet and other media to engender "support" for going about "as normal" and carrying on as if nothing had happened?

Are there any rules which prevent someone who is out on licence from going back to their previous job? If not then this is exactly what you have suggested....mob rule.

No, that's not what I said.

I was pointing out that contrary to people saying he'd served his time, he hasn't.

Also, when someone's been convicted and jailed, it's most unwise to begin a course of harassment of your victim on release. "Friends" of his also named his victim contrary to the instructions of the Judge and he hasn't conducted himself in a decent manner since his release (on licence).

If you want to "get people on your side", you don't do what he's tried to do.

Lets see if they report our results? It looks to me like the mob are attempting to usurp the force of Justice.

He's had one appeal already and he's currently seeking leave to appeal again. As mentioned earlier in the thread, just that process (seeking leave) could take up to 35 weeks (from August I think).

How many appeals are there going to be?

How about the victim seeking an appeal against the acquittal of the other bloke?

Does anyone really think that if there hadn't been such a huge groundswell of public outrage and anger, that he would have got his marching orders ? I suggest the outcome would have been very different if there hadn't.

I'm afraid I can't muster up the slightest bit of sympathy for this weasel-faced little scumball, and I'm delighted that he's got his (Football) P45 thrust into his grubby little fist, despite the machinations.

And what I can't get my head round in this soap opera, is regarding his WAG's father, Karl Massey. He's tried everything to have Evans exonerated and painted whiter than white, which includes bankrolling a campaign to clear his name. It was his own daughter that he cheated on, FGS !

And another reason to be clamping down hard on those who want to have their cake, eat it, boast about it, and justify destroying the lives of others to satisfy their own depraved lifestyles.

Another footballer or two?
