The Elgin Marbles.

What's your opinion about the fate of the Elgin Marbles? Do you think Britain should hang on to them or should they be returned to Greece?

My opinion (for what it's worth) is that they should remain here.

OK, so they were originally part of the Parthenon but at the time of their removal it is recorded fact that things from the Parthenon were being burned to make lime for building! Elgin said he had permission to remove what he did so really he saved them from destruction?

As time passes, things that were little regarded at one time becomes "desirable" by those that parted with them? It's like someone giving away an item but many years later when it's realised it has some value, the original donor then wants to claim it back so just who is the villain of the piece?

Re: The Elgin Marbles.

I personally,  have no deep feeling either way,   but understand the deep feeling of others.

So, perhps a Democratic way of solving it ?  Put it to each country's people's votes,   as to who wishes them to stay,  or go.

As our poplutaion is almost 6 - 7 times more than Greece,  some mathematician can work out the real % when it comes to counting votes.

Re: The Elgin Marbles.

Personally I tend to sympathize with the people of Greece for wanting them back and even regarding them as national treasures.  Wouldn't a trip to the Parthenon be even more splendid if the marbles were there, displayed in their original setting?

Re: The Elgin Marbles.

I'm easily swayed to your way of thinking here, and with my National Vote,  I'll vote Greece, and  Nil pointe UK.

Re: The Elgin Marbles.

There is a great deal of lack of knowledge and misunderstanding about this case. I listened to an expert on LBC explain the story in great detail - something I wasn't aware of at all. They should stay in the UK as per the true events of this tale, though Sunak's refusal to meet with the Greek PM just shows what an absolute shower the UK has for a government. There are countless British artefacts on display in foreign museums worldwide and no one is clamouring for their return. As a gesture, perhaps we could offer the Royal Family instead and have them displayed in a Greek museum.

Re: The Elgin Marbles.

That's settled then, the RF will stay here and retain their marbles in this country? 😇
