It is a complete waste of time and effort.

"What are you banging on about, Steve?"

It's the Weather forecasts that we get on the telly at the end of every News programme. I mean, what's the point? Do I watch the weather forecast and then plan my 15 minute drive to work based on what some bloke says about rain squalls in the Aberdeen area? Or do I plan my trip to the shops according to any gale force winds off the Pembrokeshire coast?

OK, I can see the point of a weather forecast for folk making a living from going out to sea but they get weather reports over their own radio channels in much greater detail than those we see on the telly. In fact, the only possible use for a weather report that I can see is to allow me to know if it is a good time to hang the washing out, AND, if truth be told, I can get a much better idea by simply opening the back door and having a look at what's happening up in the sky around us.

So exactly WHY do we have the weather forecast as it currently appears on our TV? Is it just to provide jobs for ex-university students? I ask this because, when all said and done, nobody can trust the forecast with 100% accuracy. In fact, the weather forecast is probably only correct 50% of the time and, let's face it, "Sunny with rain at times" or "Mostly wet with bouts of sunshine through the day" doesn't actually inspire us with confidence.

So why do we have them? Any clues?

Cheers,

Steve.

We have weather forcasts because it provides an opportunity for an army of (otherwise) no-marks to parade about pretending to be superstars.

It's life Jim, but not as WE know it.

Smiley LOL  It's a good question!

I don't think the farmers would agree with you though as their income is very much weather dependent.

Forewarned is forearmed, or so they say but Michael Fish (the TV weatherman) got it wrong a few years back...

Supermarkets also rely on the weather forecast to make sure they have plenty of ice cream in stock if there's a heat wave or soup if it's going to be very cold.

It would probably be more accurate to hang some seaweed outside.

If the seaweed is wet, it is raining

If it is dry, it is going to rain.
