I am trying to contact eBay customer services as an item I bought was listed as NEW and now the seller is saying I need to contact the company directly at it was a return
feel like giving up the will to live dealing with this round about of eBay
any advice welcome

Nonsense from the seller - don't listen to them.
Provided you received the order within the last 30 days - follow the steps to enact the ebay Money Back Guarantee.
Open a return with the reason Item Not as Described.
Seller will either have to refund you, or if they want the item back - provide you with a prepaid return label.

EBay won’t do anything to support on a return now as it’s outside the 30 day money back guarantee window.
depending how far outside that 30 days you are you may be able to do a chargeback via your payment provider (though it will depend how you paid)
finally you can report sellers on eBay but they will a) be unlikely to do anything and b) won’t tell you anything even if they do something.

Just to add to @jonatjonatjonat correct answer, I too feel don't waste precious time contacting CS as all eBay can action, is anything that falls fouls within that 30 day deadline in their MBG.
Any further warranty / guarantee offered between a seller and buyer is up to the buyer to follow up, or try to enforce.
If this was a registered UK business who offered a guarantee that they are now not upholding, you can ask Citizens Advice how to proceed, some would recommend contacting Trading Standards.
As said, turn to your payment provider for help with a refund now, most offer a 120 day buyer protection policy.
