Well, you fill a bottle to the very top, put an unused match in then push down on the cork. The pressure on the water causes the match to sink and if you release the pressure it comes up again.

With a little practice you can get them to 'hover' in the middle.

Cornflakes used to give little plastic figures that held a little bubble in their back which gave the same results.

All very innocent by todays standards.
