Slates are not tiles.

Tiles are made from fired clay, cement or other manufactured stuff. The copycat manufactured things that look like slates are not proper slates.

Slates are a form of soft layered rock which easily splits in to thin sheets.

Tiles have nibs on one end which hooks on to the laths.

Slates have holes in every one and are nailed to the laths.

having spent my working career in the construction industry I'm very impressed with your in depth definition of tiles and slates and how they are fixed. (I suspect Google was involved)

However, the question was 'a well known phrase or saying'

The answer is :- 'a clean slate'

However, I was hoping no-one mentioned peg-tiles or got round to the slate slabs sometimes put down as flooring......

A roof on a 17th century house I once owned had a roof of hand-made tiles which on had one nib. The nib seemed to have been made by dragging the edge of the damp clay down to form the nib some of which were very short and some tiles were bowed making for a very precarious hold on the laths. I bet those bowed tiles cause the roof to leak if the wind blew heavt rain in the "right" direction. The tiles had all been torched underneath. It made a heck of a mess when I had the roof off as the laths and nails were failing.
