One of the things you have to do Lord Leftie is go near to the bottom of the screen where it says how many posts there are and click there (I think). I'll tell you when Ive put this up.

This is how I jump to first unread post:
Open Gifs, pic and graphics thread, in 'Topic options' click 'Mark topic as read' & bookmark.
Make sure in 'My Settings'>Preferences>Linear Layout that Jump to first unread post in a topic is ticked.
When you click on Discussions Boards at the top you will see this:
