eBay policy requires ALL used clothing to be washed or cleaned before being sold.

Kaywire - I appreciate that I am a business seller from the dark side but I wouldn't sell anything second hand that wasn't ready to wear. I wash any item that has no tag, in part it lets me really check the quality of the item to see any possible defects and I iron and carefully wrap everything - usually instead of ironing my husband's shirts!. I know that some charity shops will iron clothes before putting them onto the shop floor to make them look their best for sale but I don't believe they have facilities to launder any.

Surely you wouldn't want to sell anything soiled because your account could quickly be damaged with low DSR's and feedback - even as a private seller you have to do the best job you can as clothing is a huge market on eBay with plenty choice so you want to build a good client base with happy returning buyers.

Obviously YES.

I volunteer in my local Sally Army shop, and we very often get donations early in the year that would be ideal to put out for halloween/Christmas etc - so they get stored in black bags, in a store room, untill needed.

And a lot of the clothing donations we get may have been bagged up by the donar for goodness how long.

We have a steamer in our shop for 'ironing' things, but in no way are they washed first.

I wash all clothes before wearing them - even brand new from well-known high street stores!  You just don't know if it's been tried on or not.  And a person who tried it on may not have had a bath for days - eeuuww!

To answer the question is to know it wouldn't even be asked if you lived in Liberia or Sierra Leone.

I usually hand wash an item first (unless really sure it's machine washable)  especially if there is no label, as otherwise you could have a nasty shock when the colour runs!
