You can tell them a mile away! Like the Mormans, they are IMMACULATELY dressed! LOL! They look as though they have come straight out of a tailor's window each sporting a Windsor knot on his tie. I was trying to watch the Nine-o-Clock news several years ago, when there was a knock at the door - double glazing. By the time I got rid of him I'd missed the main points of the news. Five minutes later somebody else was at the door canvassing for some political party. Seventeen minutes into the news a third and final disturbance, this time from a J W handing me free literature, including three back issues of The Watchtower, their magazine. Having missed the news I shut my eyes and humoured him, nodding occasionally. My parting words? "Go in peace, Brother." I then looked out of the window and saw about four of them rolling up with laughter. He'd obviously told them what I said and obviously they had a great sense of humour.
It's not just about not being able to take blood - just one single passage in the Bible is what the base their whole belief on. No, the biggest single eye opener is the fact that, according to them, my Saviour never died on a cross - he was nailed to an upright POST! The whole of Christianity got it wrong. I put the literature where it belonged - IN THE BIN! What they came out with there was a personal insult to Christians of every race or creed. I wasn't a practising Christian at that time just a normal C of E, but I took that very personally!

Serious question.
If you would take the bible out of the equation, would any of you still believe in a supreme being/intelligence?

mmmmmmm, that is quite a question Harry.
Thinking hard, I can honestly say I don't know.
I answer I don't know because the Bible is a core element to my faith. As I believe it to be the way Jehovah God communicates with us, it being God's word.
So if there was NEVER a Bible then I cannot say how I would think.
I am leaning towards the answer "Yes" to the question though Harry because I have learnt that the whole universe has had a designer and maker. The proof of that (in mine and millions of others opinion) is seen by the things all around us. So I possibly would be (I hope I would be) the kind of person who would question how things came to be and come to the same conclusions as I do now. So if there was never a bible, then God would have given us something else in it's place.
As there is the Bible and it is the way God chooses to teach and communicate with us I don't really have to worry about those kinds of questions. Life is as it is and we are instructed about how to live and why.

Try this..
Official Laws against Women in Iran Limitations on the lives of women are legalized in laws prohibiting women from the presidency, leadership, judgeship and certain educational fields, as well as by inheritance laws. Firmly rooted in the principle of vali-e-faqih, Iran’s constitution controls both the public and private lives and role of women. The concept of male surrogate and guardianship of females is one of the main pillars of Islamic Fundamentalism in Iran. Iranian women are not free to choose or control various aspects of their lives. Evidence of such state-sponsor of violence against women is seen in Iran’s constitution. Article 18 of passport law, married women requires their husband's permission to apply for a passport. Article 21 of Iran’s Constitution indicates: "The government must ensure the rights of women in all respects, in conformity with Islamic criteria..." This leaves it up to the clergymen to interpret the laws pertaining to women. Article 83 of the Penal Code, called the Law of Hodoud, stipulates that the penalty for fornication is flogging, i.e. 100 strokes of the lash, for unmarried male and female offenders. Article 102 of Iran’s Constitution indicates: "Women who appear on streets and in public without the prescribed ‘Islamic Hejab’ will be condemned to 74 strokes of the lash.” |

The Bible was written by God (in much the same way as a Boss directs his secretary to write for him/her) I believe that and therefore do not believe I am wasting my time. I quite accept you believe differently and as long as you are happy then that is fine.
There is a verse in the Bible which reads, "Happy are those conscious of their spiritual needs"
I am obviously conscious of my spiritual need as I persure spiritual things, and I am certainly happy in the choice to do so. I also believe I am looking in the right place to do so too.
So Tommee please do not worry on my behalf if it appears I am wasting my time, as I also have many other life living tasks and responsibilities to attend to as well. I also feel I have been well taught by God's word to equip me with the abilities to attend to them well.

Here we go again, people won't discuss or make their case, they just stone-wall state their stance without any explanation of how they claim things to be so.
I suppose if someone claimed that some hair-brained scheme was factual, those that accepted it would also just stand there claiming "I know"........ and expect everyone else to listen to them?
All over the World we have people claiming their God to have done/said/written this, that and the other and they all claim to be "right". They can't all be right so each bunch of believers claim that THEY are the one's who're "right" and so it goes on and on and all over the World people lose their lives over something which is WRONG.
It's life Jim, but not as WE know it.
Live long and prosper.

Now come on CD, that is not fair, I have always been willing to discuss and explain or to make my case in the best way I know how the trouble is you and many others are just simply closed to any reasoning and shoot me down in flames.
As I have said before, "call them hair brained schemes if you like" but I have researched and questioned and meditated on the things that have been put before me in the Bible and with the world around me and I have come to my conclusions via sound reasonings. I have not just stood there and said I know and accepted them without question.
The fact is...CD you are so convinced you are RIGHT and every one else is WRONG.........Rather like you say we are don't you think? We are all the same really, we all come to our conclusion on things and exercise our freedom of choice and keep those views.
I do believe I am on the right road, and so perhaps you do to. We will all see who is and who isn't eventually. Not wanting to seem rude or offensive I am just genuinely convinced the Bible is correct.

Tommee, The Bible doesn't state that women should be treated in the way that they are treated in Iran.
The Bible teaches Honour women, I don't believe that is how the women of Iran are treated, but there again there are many men in this country who have no respect for their women either.

Who actually wrote the words in the Bible? Who wrote the words in the books of other religions?
It was Man who wrote the words. So who said those words? How many "true" Gods are there?
Explain how those words came to be written? I suppose a God "spoke" to someone? Would that be in the same way that someone says that a voice in their head "told" them to kill someone because...... (insert any reason you like there).
Where do you start with these words? The Old Testament or the New Testament? Both have been chopped and changed over the centuries. Who wrote the Old Testament? It wasn't Christians.
When you reason it out, much just cannot be "true". Now I will say that some things are "good" in that following some of what is written leads to a fair and decent way of life but attaching some mystical element to it in order to give it a "voice of authority" is just plain silly.
It's life Jim, but not as WE know it.

I have respect for anyone who follows their own faith and also for those who don't believe in a God, and I have no intention to argue for or against, nor ridicule those who follow their scriptures.
I just like to come with a different idea.
Say there is a non-physical supreme being, who created us in its image. We would be supreme beings as well, but in a physical form.
And if we were, we would have a connection with our creator, like a parent in a way. A connection that might be something that we could feel, maybe our intuition, some kind of sense, a feeling that gives us impulses when things are right or wrong, on or off.
Instead of being powerless, small beings we would have that guidance system within us all the time that comes straight from that supreme being and connects us.
Maybe that's all we need to follow.
