DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi all, pippy_oak here, posting under my brand new user name. Hopefully, Richard will pin this thread, as it seems a nice tidy place to pose specific questions about a book (Is it a 1st edition, what's it worth, where to find it etc. etc.) Don't just come here with a question. If you think you have the answer, then let's hear it.

Or we could just mooch around and learn a few things.

Cheers

Paul

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi there - anyone knocking about over the weekend!

have looked on addall but can't find this. Ward Lock's Royal indestructible picture book - green cloth binding - cloth pages? From inscription probably 1879 ish - spine a bit damaged - pictures very vivid and excellent condition - boards are in good condition - any ideas of value?

Cheers - Migsie

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Migsie, I found 2 copies on Addall. £41 and £50.

I'm so lacking in confience at the moment that I can't hazard a guess at the value.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Just a random experiment - I have a fifth edition of Sweet's Anglo-Saxon primer (I think it's primer anyway), it's in decent condition, nice and olid boards and good pages a little pencilled in writing here and there. Any ideas on how much it's worth? I picked it up for about £4 a few years back in York.

Thanks, Matt

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Give us a chance, Matt.

What is the title, who is the author, the publisher?

Need at least one or two of those.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

UKBookworld have a 9th edition at £8.50.

It would appear to still be in print.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

I recently came across a copy of Ivanhoe published by George Routledge and Sons which has no date but is was at the time a "NEW EDITION with author's notes"....

Would you expect this to be worth listing ? I recently had about a dozen antiquarian copies of Ivanhoe in my watches , only one sold.....so I am not sure .

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Unless it is a first edition, I wouldn't bother with any of Walter Scott's stuff at all. Personally.

There are masses of every title all over the place. His own publishing company put out enough copies of each of his books to build large castles out of, and still have enough left over for fifty years supply of burning fodder for the huge fireplaces.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

A book question: when it's a signed first edition of moderate value, I was wondering whether an inscription by the author in addition to the signature (e.g. "to Jill, with my best wishes, Charles Dickens") makes the book either more or less valuable, or no difference? (see my two current book auctions for examples of this)

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Less valuable.

An inscription such as 'Let's Comply, Iain Banks' in a first of 'Complicity' raises the value. But an inscription to a named person lowers it.

Difficult to find a customer with the same name as the inscription.

On the other hand, if the dedicatee is known as well then you could be looking at added value, but it would have to be a full name.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Yes, in the case Slim mentions, with the named person being famous or a friend or relative of the author, you would have an 'association' copy.

If it was a stamp you might have a thing of value.

To a book collector the most perfect, most pristine example is the prime concern. Any defect, blemish or error is anathema.

Sorry, but only really of interest as a curiosity.

I picked up a title today from a table top sale. It had the wrong ISBN in it. But it is fine for reading purposes. Collectable? Maybe? Valuable because of the error? 'Fraid not.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Well, er. Hmmm.

One out of the last 11 listed actually sold. And it went for 99p.

For other books, it depends what they are.

If you have a signed 1937 1st edition of The Hobbit in fine condition in a fine dust jacket I'd ask around 50,000 for that one!
