DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi all, pippy_oak here, posting under my brand new user name. Hopefully, Richard will pin this thread, as it seems a nice tidy place to pose specific questions about a book (Is it a 1st edition, what's it worth, where to find it etc. etc.) Don't just come here with a question. If you think you have the answer, then let's hear it.

Or we could just mooch around and learn a few things.

Cheers

Paul

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Can you tell me the best place to try and sell these books, and give me an idea of how much to ask?

Hoover - Thompson. A Genealogical Study by Marjorie Harland Barker Diedrich Florida 1985 179/200 and Barker - Harland A Genealogical Study...same author 72/100.

They are huge beautifully bound comprehensive histories of the families, full of photos, family trees, maps etc.. and I would love to get them back to the families concerned. Only bought them from a charity shop because I couldn't bear the idea of them being pulped!

Is there some place that specialises in Geneology books?

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

When trying to decide on pricing books I took Cristo's advice and looked at Bookfinder. All you have to do is type in the ISBN and lo and behold it's all there.

I've just checked out the prices of my AGA cookbook and AGA weekend cookbook and find that they are priced from £27 - £198. Why the discrepancy? They all seem to have the same ISBN, all published 1996 and 1998 respectively. I then tried ABE and they have them from £30 to £95. They both have cheaper EX-library copies. I just don't understand why anyone would want to pay £198 for a cookbook or are they just dreaming.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

It's a very inexact science. The fact is that none of those books listed have sold at the price quoted, so it could be argued that they are not worth even £27. I'm not sure which particular AGA cookbook you are looking at, but I have found a copy of Rosemary Moon's 1998 book on Addall for 98p.

Many booksellers are blissfully unaware of the intrinsic value of their stock. When they go to list it, and find no other copies listed, they quote a silly price. Then others come along and gradually undercut, but the old listings remain. All this time, nobody has bought a single book.

The situation is even more complicated on amazon, where the use of software to adjust prices against competition is widespread, so if there are only a few copies of a book listed, the prices bounce around all over the place.

chicken_john:

The market for these is probably in the U.S. even though you would have to charge a lot for shipping.

You could try the genealogy category on ebay.com, and, besides mentioning family names and Florida, mention the names of any towns or counties where these families were concentrated.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hello. I don't want to reply to a topic - so please bear with me. I am fairly new to e bay..... I am selling a few odds and ends from home and maybe buying at car boots etc...I have a small book given to me by my uncle..it is a Ward Lock Illustrated Guide to and Popular History of the English Lakes. It is white, linen/hardback. Date before 1890 - there is a handwritten name and date of August 1890 in the front. I have looked on Abe and other sites to see what value it may be - but can't see one. There are two on Abe - nos 21 22 ?? but they are 1893 and one no date - but red cover - I have only seen any sold with red cover. Has anyone any ideas? Many thanks.

Hi all.I'm about to post a book called 'Here and There A Lusty Trout' by T.A.Powell.Book is in very good condition while the wrapper has some wear not bad for a 1947 publication.
Now to my plea for help.Inside the book is a notelet stating that Messrs Faber & Faber have pleasure in sending for review a copy of Here and There A Lusty Trout scheduled for publication on 7 Nov.1947 at 10/6 net. They go on to request that the review shall not appear before the date of publication.
Would this copy be sent to a newspaper or........Anyone know?
Thanks

#1269, don't think you're being snubbed.

I had a look around last night, and found so many books with "Cooking is Easy" in the title, that it was not possible to make a sensible suggestion. Can you remember the author, by any chance?

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

123mags, it could have been a newspaper, or a magazine, or anywhere else book reviews are published.

It is a 'review slip' and they show up quite often. Usually means the book probably hasn't ever been read.

I was given a book and map last year and any help on the subject would be great.

The book is titled Mrs Beetson's book on Household management. Inside is dated 1 oct 1887. Anybody know a reference I can find on this book?

Also stuffed in there was foldout pocket map of London.
titled Waltham Bros Pocket map of London & Croydon
New edition 1886.

Thanks very much,
Mark.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Although quite common, 19th Century copies of Mrs Beeton sell very well on ebay. I must have sold half a dozen over the years. As long as the binding is good and they look attractive, they fetch £40-£60 to kitchenalia collectors.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Having a job locating any records of the following books:

Brown Mouse
Brown and White
Children's books written and illustrated by Frank Jenners no date in either, probably 1940s or earlier.
I can find records of Jenners as an illustrator but not as an author so I don't know whether he wrote any others.
My mother has these, the first has a date inscribed by the owner as 1947. The second she picked up in a charity shop in the fifties. I want copies but have drawn a blank. Anyone any ideas where to look other than the obvious places?
