DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi all, pippy_oak here, posting under my brand new user name. Hopefully, Richard will pin this thread, as it seems a nice tidy place to pose specific questions about a book (Is it a 1st edition, what's it worth, where to find it etc. etc.) Don't just come here with a question. If you think you have the answer, then let's hear it.

Or we could just mooch around and learn a few things.

Cheers

Paul

Cris, your Observer's is okay. Dust wrappers come in all sorts of shapes. Many of the Warne items had all four corners clipped from Dws. That was the design.

Many didn't carry prices at all. The price was on a small adhesive label. Better if that is still intact, but not disastrous if it isn't.

Sparklies, what you reading the cover for? The interesting bit is inside. I'm sure Mrs Bee has lots of advice on re-covering books (especially maths exercise books).

Annmad, sorry. Can't help on that one. But 19th century biographies can be a bit sticky.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hello,

I am new to selling on eBay although I’m not a new member but have so far only managed to buy a couple of items. I will have to sort out how to sell things on eBay now though because I have put my house up for sale and am downsizing. It means that I will have quite a lot of things to sell including books. The trouble is that I don’t know how to value them so would really appreciate some advice.

The first book I hope to sell is Ken Radford’s ‘Fireburn’ Tales of Witchery, it’s a hardback complete with cover and the details are as follows;

Published 1989 by Guild Publishing by arrangement with Michael O’Mara Books Limited, CN 9889, and Printed by Redwood Burn Ltd etc……

I found the same title on eBay it’s described as a 1st Edition published 1990 and priced at US $50.

However my book doesn’t say that it is a First Edition.

It's Guild Publishing, so charity shop of recycle it and save yourself the fees.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Guild Publishing is a book club publisher, so yours is not a first edition, and is off very little value. You can spot book club editions by the lack of an ISBN (for modern books) and the presence of a CN number.

In good condition you might, if your lucky, get a few pounds for it, it's not collectiblt but someone may want to read it rather than collect it.

As its only 5p or 10 p to list a book it might make a good book to practice your listing skills on.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hiya, thought I'd ask a question in here as I've searched the board and couldn't find an answer.

How can I tell if a book is definitely leather bound? I have a fair number that look and smell like they are, but I don't know for sure.

Have tried searching the usual book sites for matching examples, but am no wiser.

Is there a "test"?

Google wasn't much use on this occasion, but I'm sure one of you people can tell me.

Thanks

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hello jeffbrg22,

I don't know how I missed your reply to my query of the 5 September but having just revisited this thread and seen your answer I hope you will accept my apology for not thanking you before.

I haven't disposed of the book yet and it is in good condition so as you say I could use it to practice my
listing skills.

Once again thank you.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

It doesn't look hugely popular. I checked via advanced search and there were a number listed in the past which haven't sold. see here:

http://tinyurl.com/29kv8o

and theres a 1977 edition listed at the moment for £9.99, three days left and no bidders so far.

Many thanks for your reply Jeff. Looks like i've nothing to loose with this one as it is so heavy the postage will probably be more than its value anyway. thanks again

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

I have a small book. Very interesting, it may or may not be valuable, but I can't track down much information.

Star Compass by Francis Chichester (yes the Sir Francis) George Allen & Unwin 1945 1st edition.

It is a small 43pp hardback in a dj including a working star compass made out of card and celluloid. It is said to be a means of determining longitude, which was a method I thought became obsolete with the development of Harrison's marine chronometer.

Any information gratefully received.

I want to list Kenneth Grahame's Wind in the Willows with illustrations by Arthur Rackham. There are 16 plates but they are on each side of a page. How does one describe this? There is also a frontispiece.

Tell it like it is, Pat. "Plates are printed on both sides".

It shouldn't worry a book lover - only a book destroyer.
